Without a doubt, Marvel and Insomniac Games' Spider-Man was one of the most exciting games shown off at E3 2017, and not only are fans eager for the superhero title's launch next year, but also Sony Interactive Entertainment seems to be champing at the bit as well. As it so happens, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, recently praised the development team's work on the forthcoming game, which he believes will eventually help the tech company reach 100 million PS4 units sold.

Layden revealed as much during an interview with The Telegraph, saying that Marvel and Insomniac Games' Spider-Man is the best opportunity for Sony to expand its customer base even more so than it is now so it can hit the goal of moving 100 million PS4 consoles. The President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America said, "Well, like I tell my sales guys, the first 60 million is the easy 60 million. To get to the next one, it’s about how do we grow the pie? . . . I think the biggest chance we have to broaden that pie is with a game like Spider-Man."

As Layden puts it, with Spider-Man arguably being the most recognizable comic book figure in existence, Sony will be able to capitalize on fans of the character who have yet to foray into the gaming world by offering them the chance to play as him on the PlayStation 4. The President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment said, "Spider-Man is probably the best known comic book character in the world and we can take that title . . . [and] I think we can bring people into gaming who may not be there yet through the power of that kind of character.”

It looks as if another reason as to why Layden believes Spider-Man will be a major system seller for Sony is due to the way in which Insomniac Games has perfectly ported the comic book character's persona and world into the PlayStation 4's realm. The Sony exec had nothing but good things to share about the developer, saying, "Insomniac has hit it out the park in realizing that character in a way that finally Spider-Man plays like you want him to play."

Taking all of this into consideration, Spider-Man definitely has the potential to increase PS4 sales beyond the system's current status of 60 million units shipped so far, but believing the game will single-handedly boost hardware sales to 100 million units seems like an outlandish exaggeration in expectations. However, that's not to say that the PS4 won't ever hit the milestone of moving more than 100 million PS4s. Rather than solely looking to Spider-Man as its hero, Sony will likely find that the concerted effort of it and the slew of other highly anticipated exclusives for the system will assist the company in achieving its sales goal.

Spider-Man is expected to release in early 2018 for PlayStation 4.
