In a recent interview, Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erick Sommers spoke with TheWrap about the development of the film and a few of its implications for other Marvel projects.

The record-shattering film Spider-Man: No Way Home, deals heavily with the complications of the Multiverse. Over the year of 2021, Marvel fans have become accustomed to the complexities of the Multiverse due to Marvel’s Disney Plus series like WandaVision, Loki, and even What If…? As the series have differed in their implications of the Multiverse, No Way Home suggests the worse is yet to come.

WandaVision very subtly introduced the Multiverse and was only fully registered as what could have been the Multiverse following the finale of Loki. McKenna and Sommers did not know of Loki’s direct relations of the Multiverse at the time they worked on the script for No Way Home but appreciated what the series did to introduce the concept before the film’s release. “We all felt like, this really helps,” Sommers said. “This is great, because it shows that there is trouble in the multiverse.” No Way Home builds on the issues Loki introduced about the Multiverse, focusing on its consequences for those that are outside of the TVA's bubble.

McKenna and Sommers mentioned that originally, No Way Home was meant to follow the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. They admitted that during the early stages of production, No Way Home suffered many changes that caused quite a few of their plans to get flipped around. “Originally, we were writing this where Strange was gonna be involved but it was after the events of Doctor Strange 2, and so where is he where is his head, and that’s something we were kicking around,” McKenna said. “And then now it seems to be more of like, ‘oh this actually gets him interested in pursuing the multiverse as a concept.’”

Given Doctor Strange’s involvement in No Way Home and the fact that the Spider-Man film was originally scheduled to take place following the sorcerer’s sequel, his inclusion in No Way Home was surprising for some. Sommers and McKenna admitted that for them, the decision to include Strange seemed natural. “I think we were gravitating towards Doctor Strange from a pretty early time, the strongest reason probably being if Peter is gonna seek to somehow undo this mess, that just seems like a logical person you would go to,” Sommers said. Aside from Strange, there are very few others who possess a level of skill that could help Peter in his quest that he shares some form of a bond.

The recently released trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows Doctor Strange approaching Wanda for help. There is also a sighting of a villain that What If… fans have already appeared to have met. Now that no one has a recollection of Peter Parker, the chance that he will appear in the sorcerer’s sequel is slim, though nothing is impossible in the MCU. Given Wanda’s magic, it’s possible that even she may be able to find some sort of memories of the web-slinging hero.
