The eyes of many Marvel fans have been trained on the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailers as they dissect them for clues about just what will happen in the upcoming movie. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie is expected to lead directly into the events of Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. For fans of Sony’s Spider-Man adjacent films, the movie is also expected to connect to the upcoming Morbius feature, though that hasn’t officially been confirmed.

What fans do know after the most recent trailer is that Spider-Man’s world is being turned upside down as a spell meant to make people forget that he’s Peter Parker goes awry. Villains from other Spider-Man universes will collide with him. In fact, there are currently five of the character’s villains from the previous Sony movies that have graced the screen so far. Lizard, Sandman, Doctor Octopus, Electro, and the Green Goblin all appear at different points. With just five villains on the screen, fans are wondering if No Way Home could actually be an MCU debut of a version of the Sinister Six. The group has a rotating cast of villains in the comics, and there was once a standalone movie planned for the Sinister Six during Andrew Garfield’s time as Spider-Man. Could there be a sixth villain that hasn’t yet been revealed? There are quite a few potential contenders.

Vulture

Michael Keaton as Vulture

Vulture is one of Spider-Man’s first villains he faces on his own - and one that likely holds a grudge. (He was also a founding member of the Sinister Six in the comics.) Adrian Toomes blames Spider-Man for his ending up in prison, but also for damaging his relationship with his daughter. He hasn’t had a presence in the MCU since ending up in prison and his wife and daughter moving across the country.

The audience already knows that Michael Keaton is shooting more scenes for an upcoming Marvel project, but which one isn’t yet known. He’s also been shown in the trailer for Morbius, so he’s definitely on the way. The question is just whether or not he could be involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home. All of the villains present in the trailer are from the universes of other Peter Parkers, not the MCU’s. If there is a sixth villain, it stands to reason that the final one will be from the current universe. Vulture is a natural leader though, and he might clash with the likes of the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus. While he’s a possible candidate, it’s more likely his lingering presence will be teased for another chapter.

Scorpion

Mac Gargan smiles when he meets Adrian Toomes in prison in Spider Man Homecoming

Mac Gargan happens to be in the same prison as Adrian Toomes. At least, he was the last time the audience saw him. Gargan, with his tattoo of a scorpion in a nod to his comic book codename, tried to get Toomes to tell him who Spider-Man really was, but Toomes didn’t give Peter up.

Green Goblin might be Spider-Man's best known villain, but Scorpion can't be counted out. Gargan definitely wants to get back at Spider-Man, and he wouldn’t be above using the confusion of something like the Snap to find a way to escape prison, or the opening of the multiverse to capitalize on Spider-Man being overwhelmed with enemies. With the audience knowing that he’s been on the lookout for Spider-Man’s identity, and Peter’s identity being revealed to the public at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Scorpion’s vendetta is definitely a loose end in the MCU. It’s not a question of whether he’ll come after Peter, but when he will. The movie could provide him with a great opportunity.

Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio in Spider-Man Far From Home

Sure, it seems that Mysterio is no more. Quentin Beck supposedly died at the end of Far From Home. Mysterio, however, is a master of illusions who seemed to plan for his death or disappearance with a perfectly timed video naming Peter Parker as Spider-Man. It’s Mysterio who causes Peter to attempt to find a way to make everyone forget his identity in the first place, kicking off the events of No Way Home.

Whether Mysterio faked his death and has a larger part to play, or perhaps joins the group as a Mysterio from another universe, he could easily be the sixth member of the group. Mysterio has enough charm, and the ability to manipulate, to make himself the de facto leader of this incarnation of the Sinister Six. Even if he isn’t present in the movie, his fingerprints are going to be on everything. Like Vulture, he was also a founding member of the Sinister Six in the comics, along with Electro, Sandman, and Doctor Octopus, who all appear in the movie.

Kraven The Hunter

The one founding member of the Sinister Six in 1964’s Spider-Man comics who hasn’t already appeared in the trailer for the movie (or the MCU at all) is Kraven the Hunter. It might seem out of left field for him to join the group since he’s not appeared on screen yet, but the character is slated to get his own movie from Sony, so it can’t be that far out.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who played Pietro Maximoff in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, has been cast in the role already. There’s been no details released about the potential film on the horizon, but Tom Holland did reveal in interviews that he pitched potential project ideas involving both Venom and Kraven in the event that Spider-Man wouldn’t be in the MCU anymore. Having Kraven appear as a villain here could easily set up the villain’s own movie.

Hobgoblin

This particular villain hasn’t been seen in the MCU, or in the previous live action Spider-Man movies. Why then does Hobgoblin seem like a possibility? It’s the supervillain identity of Ned Leeds.

So far, there’s no indication that Peter Parker’s best friend is going to stray into supervillain territory. That, however, would be quite the twist for the audience as villains filter into the story from other universes. Could Peter come face to face with a version of his friend who wasn’t content with being the best friend of a masked vigilante? Or could something happen to change the MCU so that this version of Ned takes on the mantle? Either way, the addition of Ned to the Sinister Six would definitely be a surprise for the audience and could set up a potential new storyline if Spider-Man continues to play in MCU’s playground.

Spider-Man

Tom Holland as Spider-Man without his mask in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man isn’t a villain, but that doesn’t mean he can’t end up on the side of the perceived bad guys. There’s a moment in the new trailer that sees Peter upset when Doctor Strange implies the only way to get rid of the villains is to kill them. Of course, this moment could be taken out of context in the trailer, but it could also be planting the seed for the MCU’s Peter Parker to try to prevent Doctor Strange from taking the villains out.

This storyline could, as many things in the MCU do (like Clint Barton’s family), draw from the Ultimate universe of Marvel comics. There, Spider-Man was blackmailed into joining the Ultimate version of the Sinister Six, however briefly. His time involved him being stuck in the middle of a fight between the villains who wanted to recruit him and the heroes he respected. He didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Something very similar could play out as Peter finds himself caught between the emerging multiverse and Doctor Strange’s corrective action.

The audience will find out when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17.
