Ted Price, president and CEO of Insomniac Games, confirms that the developer's upcoming Spider-Man game will not be tied to the movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.

For many gamers, Sony was the clear winner of E3 2016. The company made a number of huge announcements during its presentation, including the reveal of a brand new Spider-Man game exclusive for the PS4. The title is being developed by none other than Insomniac Games, a studio famous for its work on the likes of the Ratchet and Clank franchise and Sunset Overdrive.

The Spider-Man game did not receive a name, however, with the game's initial trailer signing off with the hashtag #SPIDERMANPS4 instead. This led some gamers to suspect that the title would tie in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is due to arrive in July 2017. However, Insomniac Games president and CEO Ted Price has confirmed that the game will not be related to the movie.

Instead, the Spider-Man game is going to focus on a Spider-Man with a little more savvy when it comes to being a superhero. "He's got a lot of experience fighting crime in New York City," said Price at E3 2016. "You'll see this Peter Parker struggling with the challenges of balancing a chaotic life with his responsibility that he feels toward the city."

The news that the Spider-Man game will be its own different entity may come as a relief to fans of the webslinger. The hero has not always had the best of time with games, aside from the excellent Spider-Man 2 in 2002 and 2000's original PlayStation adaptation of the animated TV series. Indeed, the recent games based on the Amazing Spider-Man films have not quite been up to scratch.

Hopefully, with the pressure taken away from having to tie in the game to the movie, Insomniac will be able to take the title in its own direction, and spend time making sure that it is the best game possible. Of course, there is still the possibility that outside pressures could force Insomniac to a stricter timeframe, as was seen with Star Wars Battlefront, where DICE was tasked with getting the game ready for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

That said, this might be the best chance that the Spider-Man property has for a return to high quality video games. The hero has a long history in gaming, and it has been proven that, with care an attention, the series can lead to some of the best superhero-focused games around. No doubt fans of Spidey will be eagerly awaiting more news - as well as further announcements on the "epic games" that Marvel Studios has planned.

Spider-Man will be released exclusively for the PS4.
