While getting behind-the-scenes looks at the voices of ancillary characters like Walker Sloan and Mary Jane was all well and good, what the people really want to see is the web crawler himself. To feed that need, Activision and Beenox have released yet another behind-the-scenes interview with a member of the Spider-Man: Edge of Time voice cast, this time focused on the man who is Spider-Man 2099, Christopher Daniel Barnes.

Best known for voicing Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the animated series — along with playing Greg Brady in the spooftastic feature films — Barnes is right at home in the Spider-Man universe.

He was actually the voice of Spider-Man Noir in the first Beenox game, Shattered Dimensions, but since Noir is notably absent, he’s taking over 2099-voicing duties from Dan Gilvezan — a Spider-Man voice legend in his own right.

From the trailer, and to a lesser extent those that preceded it, it can be seen that many of the key elements from Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions are being preserved for Edge of Time — namely the combat and 2099’s free-falling sequences. Whether or not Beenox has found a way to incorporate Noir’s stealth sections or Ultimate’s rage meter into Edge of Time without including those characters is undetermined at this point, but we hope they use some varied gameplay elements to break up the monotony.

It seemed like with the first Beenox game that there was a stronger focus on gameplay, while this one is equally concerned with making a great Spider-Man game but also telling a great Spider-Man story. It might not be as far reaching, or incorporate as many Spider-Men as Shattered Dimensions, but Edge of Time looks very intriguing.

Obviously when telling a unique story that stretches into Spider-Man’s future it makes sense to keep things simple, but keeping that back-and-forth between Spider-Mans seems to be well preserved. Gamers will be able to see for themselves when the game releases later this year.

What do you think of Christopher Daniel Barnes as the voice of Spider-Man 2099? Are you more excited for Edge of Time than you were for Shattered Dimensions?

Spider-Man: Edge of Time releases October 4, 2011 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii.
