The release date for Insomniac's PS4 exclusive Spider-Man title is still months away, but details about the game are pouring in this week. Gamers got an early look at how web slinging works in the upcoming game and, now, it's time to look behind the scenes of the game's combat system.

Unlike in the recent Spider-Man movie, this version of Peter Parker is a little older and is very familiar with his powers and how to use them to take down foes. Spider-Man players will be able to feel incredibly powerful and creative as they harness the character's abilities to become masters of improvisational fighting.

In a new interview, the game's Creative Director Bryan Intihar explains exactly how the combat system works. During the interview, he explains that melee combat is the foundation of Spider-Man's combat, but that's just the beginning. Things start off by spamming a few punches and kicks, but the fight quickly progresses until Spidey is up in the air and using his acrobatics, gadgets, and webs in incredibly unique and fun ways.

There was also an emphasis on Spidey's ability to use the environment for improvisational attacks. The video features the character kiting bad guys under some construction scaffolding and then using a web pull to collapse the structure on top of them.

Unlike recent superhero games, like the Arkham series, this combat system doesn't focus on combos. The combat team intentionally avoided a combo based approach, for one that is more move and ability centered, to allow for player creativity.

One way that the combat may resemble the Arkham series however is that there will be a lot of enemies, with a lot of different weapons, coming at Spidey during many of the encounters. The character has enough power that one versus one fights wouldn't be very exciting for the most part, so get ready for some hordes of foot soldiers once you are spotted. Although Spider-Man is powerful enough to rush into big fights, there will also be the option to be slow and stealthy.

One of the exciting details for action RPG fans is that Spider-Man will be able to gain new abilities throughout the game, as well as craft new gadgets and suits. This should offer a rewarding level of progression as players power through the title. Ratchet and Clank players can expect to see a familiar gadget wheel to manage the items and quickly change between them.

We'll post updated as more details about the upcoming game are shared. Check back soon!
