The favorite indie roguelite known as Spelunky as well as its sequel counterpart Spelunky 2 will both be coming to the Nintendo Switch complete with all of their bells and whistles next year.

After a fantastic reputation set by Spelunky and its multiplayer version, Spelunky 2 released for the PS4 earlier this year, shortly followed by a PC version of the game. Spelunky 2 was noted for implementing the same mechanics and brutal gameplay from the first game as almost a reimagining of Spelunky but made it a challenge even for veteran players to keep it exciting. Many fans highlighted that they largely enjoyed the PS Vita version of Spelunky in the past and hoped that its sequel would get a Switch port.

Starting next summer, Spelunky and Spelunky 2 will be available in the Nintendo Switch eShop, announced at today's Nintendo's Indie World stream. But for many fans, the series wouldn't be complete without the multiplayer option. Not only can players kill monsters, launch dogs, and drown in lava, but they can do all of it with their friends in Spelunky and Spelunky 2 on the Switch as well.

During the Indie World Showcase, creator and designer Derek Yu tuned in to make the announcements, also noting that "Spelunky was an important game to the action roguelike genre," because Spelunky served as the inspiration for many modern-day roguelites and roguelikes with its randomized levels and obstacles.

Being a key series of the roguelite genre, Spelunky is brutal yet rewarding, and Spelunky 2 upped the intensity, even punishing returning players who know the ins and outs of the first game. One Twitter commenter who is hopefully excited for the port said, "Switches are the perfect size for throwing in to walls you know."

Spelunky 2 is available on PC and PS4, with a Switch version coming summer 2021.
