Spelunky is a well-known and popular indie game, as it is often lauded for having rewarding challenges and plenty of secrets hidden within its repeating roguelike structure. Creator Derek Yu said Spelunky 2 will be even more "rich and dynamic" when introducing its PS4 release date at Sony's State of Play in August, and now PC players know they can look forward to Spelunky 2 on September 29.

Yu advertised the sequel's Steam release date on Twitter today, letting fans know they can wishlist the game to get a notification once it becomes available. The official Steam page still says Spelunky 2 is just "coming soon" as of this writing, but interested players can still peruse the listing to find out what the game will bring over its predecessor, such as denser worlds, multiplayer features, and "possibly more eggplants" — which are further teased by Yu's Tweet including an eggplant emoji.

The new roguelike 2D platformer was originally revealed in 2017, however Yu announced Spelunky 2 would be delayed in August 2019. Given how popular Spelunky became after it initially released in 2008, fans should be happy to know that more cave-crawling action is right around the corner following this extended development cycle.

Spelunky is not the only popular indie roguelike making its return with new entries in 2020. Earlier this year, Cellar Door Games announced Rogue Legacy 2 would be entering early access. The Rogue Legacy 2 early access launch was delayed in July, but became available on Steam August 18.

Spelunky 2 releases September 14 on PS4, and September 29 on Steam.
