Despite how difficult high score runs in Spelunky 2 can be, one gamer spent 7 hours beating the record for most gold collected in a single run, clocking in at over $11 million.

Spelunky is a hub for speedrunners and record-breakers, and it's been no different since Spelunky 2's release last year. There are over a dozen different special runs created by players who have mastered the system, such as a Pacifist Run, a Solo Eggplant Run, and a Hamlet Run where players must finish the game with a skull in hand. But there's also a Gold Run, where players must, of course, collect as much gold as possible by smashing jars for diamonds and reaching special areas.

But another important method to getting these high scores and collecting massive amounts of gold is by blowing up the levels in Spelunky 2. This is how Twiggle came to beat the world record for gold collected in a single Speklunky 2 run. In a 7-hour grind featuring the True Crown, an item that makes the player automatically teleport every 22 seconds but also gives them 22 bombs each time, Twiggle recorded the record-breaking $11,209,900 gold.

Ultimately, what brought Twiggle to his demise and the end of this Spelunky 2 run was at level 7-80, a flying yeti knocked him into a cosmic jellyfish, effectively killing him.

But Twiggle explained to PC Gamer how he didn't make it to the endgame, meaning that he can theoretically beat the score by improving. He ended on 7-80, meaning he missed about 20 levels of gold and gems in the Cosmic Ocean levels. Twiggle said he looks forward to completing a run with $12.5 to $14 million gold in his pockets.

Spelunky 2 is out now for PC and PS4, with a Switch version in development.
