The battle royale genre has become pretty crowded this year with the likes of Call of Duty: Warzone and Fall Guys, and it’s about to become a little more so, as it’s just been announced that Proletariat Inc.’s Spellbreak will be launching next week.

Among the many announcements that were made during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live was the news that Spellbreak, which has been in closed beta since last year, will finally become available for everyone to play next Thursday, September 3. This was confirmed in a new cinematic trailer where it was confirmed that it will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One, though the PC version will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

What sets this game apart from most battle royale games is that players, rather than shooting guns, are wielding magic against one another. Each match in Spellbreak will let them equip different elemental spells and magical items that they’ll find scattered across the map, which they can mix and match to create different spell combinations to give them an edge in battle.

There’s a lot going for the game that could help it stand out from the rest of the genre. It also helps that Proletariat recently confirmed that Spellbreak will come with cross-play support across all four platforms. This support will also include cross-progression and cross-party features that will be available on day one, so it will be easy for players to duke it out with friends no matter which platforms they’re on.

Spellbreak will be free-to-play starting September 3 for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One.
