Spellbreak looks to be shaping up to be one of the most interesting battle royale games of 2020, though it has stiff competition in that category thanks to Fall Guys coming soon to PS4 and Steam.

For those who don’t know, Spellbreak is a battle royale game where players control Breakers who wield elemental magic. Recently, the developers behind the game, Proletariat, have confirmed that the game will have cross-progression across four platforms.

The battle royale genre has exploded over the last couple years, with many mainstream games following the trend and seeing massive success for it. Even massive, next-generation titles like Halo Infinite have rumored battle royale modes planned despite only having a standard multiplayer history in the series’ past.

However, while most battle royale games play as standard first-person shooters with normal guns and various abilities and perks, Spellbreak stands out among the rest, in a few key ways. One of those ways is its availability and cross-play functionality on four different platforms at launch.

Proletariat previously confirmed that Spellbreak would feature cross-play functionality between four platforms: Epic Games Store on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. Now, the team has confirmed that cross-progression between all four platforms will be implemented, which is an impressive and appreciated feat. Thankfully, it seems that fans won't have to worry about where they play the game as long as their accounts are linked between platforms, as some might want a smoother experience to appreciate the game's beautiful art-style. When the game was first announced, the development team revealed a promising teaser and batches of Spellbreak screenshots to show off the game’s stunning environments and effects.

It feels like more and more often, players are seeing new takes on the standard battle royale from developers all across the industry. For example, comparing Ubisoft’s Hyper Scape to other battle royale’s will show plenty of key differences in the gameplay, rule-set, and environment. Unfortunately, most battle royale games will have to share many core elements of gameplay to have them work and be successful in the genre. Hopefully, Spellbreak can alleviate some of those tired or worn-out elements.

With any luck, Spellbreak can do just that, as the game does look to be a fresh take on battle royale combat, traversal, and exploration. The various spells each have their own unique attributes and abilities, allowing for a variety of different play styles and approaches to combat. With many streamers ditching Fortnite for other games in the battle royale genre, perhaps Spellbreak will find a positive niche with influences on social media regardless of the platform they choose to play on.

Spellbreak will be available later this year on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
