Delays aren’t always a sign of good things to come. Sometimes they can help to really refine a game, and other times all they do is make things worse. Spec Ops: The Line has seen numerous delays since its 2009 announcement, but now that its June 26th 2012 release date has been revealed we can finally see how time has treated the (virtual) sands of Dubai.
Spec Ops: The Line was supposed to hit retailers in the Spring, but has now been moved to an early Summer release. Those who pre-order the game (at participating retailers, of course) will automatically be upgraded to the game’s FUBAR Edition — a fitting name considering The Line‘s ravaged setting.
The FUBAR Edition comes with extra bonuses for the game’s multiplayer. These bonuses vary from cosmetic changes to combat advantages. The Line’s multiplayer will be class-based, which alludes to a possible emphasis on team work, though that’s all of the information 2K shared.
The Spec Ops: The Line FUBAR Edition includes:
- Twice the amount of experience points will be awarded during the first week of play, enabling gamers to expedite character ranking.
- The AK-47 weapon will unlock at rank one.
- The “Officer Class” will unlock at rank one. This character class includes several team-based advantages, such as reducing damage to teammates and increasing the effectiveness of other classes.
- Access to the “FUBAR Pack,” which contains exclusive accessories allowing players to customize their characters with unique and visually distinctive items.
The whole idea of pre-ordering to receive the “special edition” has become a very common practice in the game industry, but it would have been great if 2K had included some real life items — I’m a sucker for video game soundtracks.
With military shooters becoming a cliche in gaming, it’s nice of Spec Ops: The Line to try and stray away from becoming a generic shooter, though the most recent trailer may leave players thinking otherwise. Still, now that the game has a definite release date we’ll be able to see if YAGER was truly able to craft something special. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait.
Spec Ops: The Line releases June 26, 2012, for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
