Originally, Honey Bunny, an early female counterpart of Bugs Bunny, was slated to be used for the role, but the idea was scrapped after artists pointed out that she was too similar looking to Bugs. The concept character was drawn in an American flag style leotard too, quite a divergent design from the final product.
