The Space Invaders brand is about to enter a brand new reality with this new upcoming title from Square Enix Montreal. Announced during today's Square Enix Presents livestream, Taito is collaborating with the mobile game studio to create an augmented reality Space Invaders game.

Square Enix Montreal is known for its work on other mobile games such as Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go, but this time, it's taking on a property not usually published by Square Enix. This collaboration seems to be capitalizing on the success of other massive AR games such as Pokemon GO, but this time with a completely different nostalgic property.

The trailer unfortunately does not show any footage of the concept, instead featuring a montage that displays the cultural impact of the iconic arcade game. Fans who do want to see how this will play can register on Square Enix's site to receive updates and news about this upcoming project, including any potential future looks at gameplay.

While no footage was actually shown, one can still easy predict how the concept will work. Gameplay will likely entail shooting down enemy spaceships that are simulated to be in the real world, defending reality from an AR alien invasion. The specifics of how this will be structured are still a mystery, however.

Square Enix and Taito jumping onto the augmented reality train is surely unexpected, and one has to wonder if this project will work out for them. Beyond Pokemon GO, most other attempts at AR mobile games have failed, including Minecraft's creative take on the idea. On the other hand, Space Invaders does have the potential to stand out from these games, so fans of the property will have to wait and see if this concept can thrive.

The untitled Space Invaders AR game is in development for Mobile.
