Although South Park is mostly known as a highly popular comedy series, there have also been several games from the franchise that have managed to allow fans to feel like they are playing an episode of the cartoon. The last South Park game to be released was South Park: Phone Destroyer, which is a mobile game, although most gamers will be more familiar with the Ubisoft developed titled South Park: The Fractured But Whole which was released in 2017. It appears that a new South Park game is on the way judging by a recent job posting by Question Games.

Question Games is an interesting choice, as the studio is responsible for titles such as The Blackout Club and The Magic Circle. If the studio is truly working on South Park, it should take some inspiration from South Park: The Streaming Wars and its sequel. The biting satire made in the films will likely click with players, especially because many of the problems highlighted are slowly finding their way into the gaming world.

South Park: The Streaming Wars Parodies Modern Streaming Services

South Park The Streaming Wars Randy Marsh Karen

In South Park: The Streaming Wars, which stretches over two films, Denver is struggling with drought due to the irresponsible use of water. Steve and Tolkien Black realize that they can help Denver out by selling some of their farm's extra water supply, although they have to first prove that their water stream is making it to Denver's reservoir. To do this, Stan and Tolkien build little paper boats that float all the way downstream, and soon enough, Steve has subscribers to his streaming service. Eventually, he starts facing competition, including Stan's father, Randy Marsh, who also pays Stan and his friends to make content in the form of boats for his stream. As more competitors pop up, Stan's services are required more, which inevitably results in the quality of his product dropping.

In typical South Park fashion, things take an absurdist turn, and the town is soon dealing with urine-laced water, ManBearPig, and Randy going full nuclear Karen. However, the movies also make good points relating to streaming services and how ruthless competition between the different providers can sometimes have negative consequences for consumers. It also reveals a certain amount of self-awareness from the creators who have recently signed a lucrative deal ensuring that they will make at least fourteen films exclusively for Paramount+.

Why Should the Upcoming Game Look to The Streaming Wars

Both The Streaming Wars films have been well-received by critics, who acknowledge how accurate the satire contained is. Many issues plaguing current streaming services are made apparent, including over-saturation and the focus on quantity over quality. Best of all, it manages to make this satire while featuring the most beloved characters from the series, and while offering some of the funniest moments South Park has had in years. Furthermore, the problems pointed out have begun to creep into the gaming world too which has steadily embraced streaming services such as Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus, and while this gives gamers access to vast libraries of games, some gamers have questioned whether the quality of games on offer, especially the classic games, is worth the price.

South Park's deal with Paramount+ ensures that the series will continue running until at least 2027, which will mark its 30th anniversary. With a new game possibly coming up, it appears that the franchise has no plans of slowing down, and instead is looking to maintain its cultural relevance. To make the upcoming South Park game a success, it may be a good idea to take inspiration from The Streaming Wars, which managed to resonate with viewers and capture the current zeitgeist.
