PlayStation 5 was released exactly one year ago on November 12, 2020. Throughout these 12 months, fans have enjoyed playing through a wide variety of games on PS5 from both Sony’s own studios as well as third-party publishers.

Noteworthy PS5 launch games included Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls, while the early summer timeframe saw the release of two marquee exclusives in Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. During this time, PlayStation Studios also grew in size after the recent acquisitions of Bluepoint Games, Firesprite, Housemarque, and Nixxes. As a way to celebrate PS5’s first anniversary, Sony has released a list of the top-played games on the platform.

The post first reveals some noteworthy statistics, as of September 30, about the PS5 software line-up. It confirms that over 360 games have been released for the console and more than 25 titles are currently in development at PlayStation Studios. It later states that PS5 users have collectively played over 4.6 billion hours of gameplay, in addition to broadcasting over 26 million hours of content. Finally, the blog post lists the top ten PS5 games based on gameplay hours.

The list is as follows:

  • Fortnite
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • FIFA 21
  • NBA 2K21
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Destiny 2
  • MLB The Show 21
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Demon’s Souls
  • NBA 2K22

Some of the biggest franchises in the world like Call of Duty, Destiny, and Assassin’s Creed, in addition to sports games like NBA, FIFA, and MLB The Show, are all well represented in this list. NBA 2K22 showing up at the final spot is perhaps the biggest surprise, given that it released just two months ago. The blog post also confirms that PS5 is the biggest console launch in history, before acknowledging the ongoing stock issues.

It is not surprising to see Fortnite at the top of this list, but there are a few other noteworthy entries. Fans probably expected Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales to be there despite its relatively short length, but even Demon’s Souls made it, which is a remarkable achievement considering its sales potential when compared to the other games on this list. PS5 overall had a great first year, and 2022 is looking even better with Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, and Gran Turismo 7 all scheduled to launch next year.

While the PS5 software line-up is filled with exciting games, the console is still not easy to find. A recent report suggests that Sony has just lowered the total supply of PS5 consoles for the rest of the fiscal year from 16 million units to around 14.8 million. This decrease is primarily due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage that is affecting various industries all around the world.
