Earlier this week, Sony was in the news once more as rumors indicated that the Japanese company was in advanced discussions to purchase Take-Two Interactive. This would give Sony exclusive access to some big name IPs like Bioshock, XCOM, the NBA 2K series, and of course, all of the megahits from the portfolio of Rockstar Games. While these reports resulted in Take-Two's stock prices to jump 5%, it seems that the excitement was a bit premature.

Yesterday, a spokesperson at Sony commented on the recent Take-Two whispers and effectively shut them down. The person maintained that the company didn't know where the rumors were coming from and stated that there is no such plan to acquire Take-Two Interactive. To further cast doubt on the speculation, Take-Two later came out to say that the company doesn't comment on rumors or speculation. With Sony seemingly killing the rumor outright, Take-Two's stock has already taken a dip back down, falling 3% from where it was the previous day.

Following the reports from MarketWatch yesterday, Joel Kulina and Michael Patcher from Wedbush Securities shed a bit more light on the situation. Kulina admitted that he was passing along a rumor and Patcher followed up later that day to confirm that the source of the information was basically second-hand from someone overhearing a conversation. What's interesting is that even an unsubstantiated rumor like this, which seemingly came about as a result of chatter and gossip, was enough to influence Wall Street traders.

Even with the rumor now in doubt, this isn't the first time Sony and Take-Two have been linked. The two companies partnered up back in 2007 to announce a then-PlayStation 3 exclusive known as Agent. Very little was ever revealed about the game, though details eventually came out that Agent would take place during the 1970's Cold War era and feature themes of espionage and counter-intelligence. While Take-Two has continued to renew the trademark in the past, recent events seem to indicate that the game may never see the light of day as towards the end of 2018, the United States Patent and Trademark Office announced that the Agent trademark has been officially abandoned.
