The PlayStation 5 has already experienced a series of leaks as well as mounting rumors and it now seems that Sony has now patented technology which will stop leaks spreading from the next generation of consoles. Many players will be aware of the recent substantial leaks of the PS5 exclusive The Last of Us 2 and while this new technology won't prevent in-house employees of developers leaking content, it will stop the sharing of content from console to console.

The PlayStation franchise is the best selling home console series of all time, but during its impressive lifespan, the internet has increasingly become a home for leaks and spoilers. While it seems that little can be done about the spread of information on the internet, particularly for those who wish to find it, the PlayStation 5 looks to limit possible spoiler content that players could see by being friends with other players.

The blocking program will spot game details that would be considered spoilers and block users who have not reached these elements from seeing them in user-generated content or achievements. Perhaps what is most interesting about this technology is that it gives developers the ability to mark spoilers so they can only be uncovered by an individual as they progress through the game. This will be an optional setting on the PlayStation 5 but many players will appreciate that they can switch on the console without the fear of encountering spoilers before they even start the game. Although this is a positive step, it will not stop other forms of leaks. The patent is below:

While this seems like a positive step in enabling players to control what content they see, it will not stop leaks from developers. Many have recently questioned the ethics of the practices in Naughty Dog, who work exclusively with Sony, after a rumored disgruntled employee leaked key parts of The Last of Us 2 and these kinds of leaks would continue despite this patented technology. It seems that Sony may need a larger effort to prevent leaks from external sources despite this idea looking to be helpful for players who are on the console.

While many will appreciate this feature alongside the other promising hardware of the PlayStation 5, it will not stop the issue of leaks online. To avoid online spoilers players will still have to tread very carefully and be cautious about what they click.

The PlayStation 5 is set to release on holiday 2020.
