In a matter of months, Sony confirmed it wouldn't be holding its annual PlayStation Experience event in 2018, before announcing it would also be skipping E3 2019 this June for the first time in the trade show's 24-year history. The company's absence has left many wondering what it has planned for the future of the PlayStation 4, its remaining lineup of AAA exclusive titles, and how much longer it will be until the inevitable reveal of the PlayStation 5. Some people, however, have been more direct when addressing their thoughts on how the tech firm is already approaching 2019.

For Michael Pachter, an analyst for WedBush Securities, he not only believes the decision for Sony to skip E3 this year is a one-time occurrence, but also that the company has made a huge mistake by removing itself altogether from the convention. Pachter feels that regardless of how much or how little the company has to show in terms of multiple, quality exclusive titles, the publicity at an event as large as E3 is worth the money for it to spend to attend.

"I don't know what they spend on E3, but even if it's $15 million, they get $15 million of publicity out of it. So I think they're fools to bypass the show. And they'll be back."

Even at last year's E3, Sony had taken a different approach to release date announcements and game reveals before its press conference ever started. In the week leading up to E3, Sony announced the then-release date for Days Gone, while also revealing Tetris Effect for PS4 and PS VR for Fall 2018. Doing this helped to get smaller stories out to the media before the conference, which focused heavily on four PS4 exclusives such as The Last of Us: Part 2, Ghosts of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and Marvel's Spider-Man.

It's highly unlikely Sony is done with E3 for good, though, especially with the company having revealed it has a new console in development, as well as it having confirmed that the PS4 is in the "final phase of its life cycle". Nevertheless, it's unclear at this point as to exactly where and when Sony will come back strong with reveals for hardware and exclusive games.

With the tech firm having backed out of the upcoming E3, the company may be planning to go radio silent for the majority of the year. That said, many have speculated we could see some big announcements coming for the future of Sony PlayStation by the end of 2019.
