The launch of a new console generation is approaching quickly as Sony and Microsoft continue to hype up their next-generation platforms. While there's no release date for the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X, that isn't stopping one company from looking ahead and setting expectations. According to sources, PlayStation 5 shipments could reach a historic number in the console's first five years.

The PlayStation 5 is still set to release this upcoming Holiday but Sony has yet to announce an actual release date. Earlier this month, a Bloomberg report revealed that Sony wants to double the production of the PlayStation 5 to be prepared for an assumed higher demand. By March 2021, Sony wants to have produced 10 million units for consumers, a number that would outpace the sales of the PlayStation 4 in the same time frame.

The short term plans for the PlayStation 5 seem optimistic, but according to a new source from the supply chain in Taiwan, Sony may ship at least 120 million units in the next five years. The source went on to speculate that the home console life cycle may actually shorten from the usual six to seven years down to around five years and Sony may attempt to ship between 120 million and 170 million units shipped in that five-year life span.

If the PlayStation 5 hits 120 million units shipped and sold, it would become one of the best selling consoles of all time. The PlayStation 5 would just be another success for Sony as it already owns a few spots in the top 10 for best selling consoles. Its current home console, the PlayStation 4, has sold over 110 million units and the PlayStation 2 is the best selling console ever at 155 million units. Sony is looking to keep its streak of success going with the PlayStation 5.

Producing more consoles in the world's current state makes a lot of sense. The demand for consoles has been out of control as the coronavirus pandemic is keeping people home. Fans originally thought that the pandemic would affect the production of the PlayStation 5 but PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has said he is confident that the production of the PS% will not be impacted and is confident the console will launch on globally.

There's no doubt that PlayStation fans are eager to get their hands on the PlayStation 5. However, Sony has still yet to reveal the price of its new console lineup, and a high priced PlayStation 5 may be a concern for some consumers. Sony is preparing to roll out the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition this year and fans are hoping one is cheaper than the other. Ryan mentioned back in April that the PlayStation team will "focus on getting the value equation right" when it comes to pricing out its new consoles.

The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to release Holiday 2020.
