The new PlayStation 5 is about a week away from releasing alongside with the DualSense controller. As such, there have been plenty of PS5 accessories unboxed by various critics and online game reviewers to show off the console before launch. During this process, it has also come to light that Sony is using recyclable packaging materials for the next-generation console.
The PS5's packaging material has been getting more attention due to how eco-friendly it is. Notably, Sony is switching from using plastic and Styrofoam to recyclable cardboard. Even the DualSense controller is getting the cardboard packaging treatment too. The packaging for the PS5 is reportedly well organized, but is far from "glamorous" as some might expect.
The PS5 comes in a more minimally designed box that prioritizes function over form. First, there's the PS5 retail box people may be familiar with, and inside is a secondary cardboard box. This second box has an accessible flap which opens up to a long cardboard box holding the console's cables, controller and instruction manuals. Underneath it is the PS5 itself, wrapped in anti-static plastic material and held securely between two bumpers resembling egg cartons.
The simple package design and use of cardboard materials lets players easily unbox the console and its accessories. The changed design and use of recyclable materials reflects Sony's attempts to be more eco-friendly going forward. PlayStation joined the "Playing For The Planet" initiative last September, an effort by the United Nations to work with the gaming industry in its efforts towards reducing its carbon footprint. The membership includes companies such as Microsoft, Stadia, and Unity.
As such, the company has been steadily making some changes to help integrate more environmentally friendly methods. One of which includes the reduction of plastic in upcoming PlayStation products. This goes double for the cardboard material used for securing the console's accessories as well as the bumpers that hold the PS5.
The recyclable packaging material certainly makes it easier for customers to dispose of their boxes after opening them, and is one of several changes the company is attempting to implement. Last year, Sony claimed the PS5 rest mode would be more energy efficient than the PS4. Customers will be able to see for themselves if the console can deliver on that promise when it releases soon. Whether or not the company can meet all its eco-friendly goals, the PS5's recyclable packaging is a good start.
The PlayStation 5 launches on November 12.
