Just two weeks from now, the gaming industry will move into an entirely new console generation with the launch of the PS5. For many in the gaming community it's an exciting time, but also an uncertain one. Many PS4 owners looking to purchase a PS5 are hoping the transition is as smooth as possible, and luckily Sony has something in mind to help out PSVR owners.

For a long time, many were unsure whether or not PlayStation VR would be compatible with the PS5. While it was ultimately announced that users would be able to use PSVR on PS5, there was a catch: The PS5's tracking camera wouldn't work with PSVR, likely due to the technological disparity between the two pieces of hardware.

The fact that the PS5 camera would not allow players to properly use PSVR on PS5 was a letdown for some. Though, this led Sony to announce a special adapter for PSVR owners in lieu of any cross-generational support. The pricing had not been announced in tandem with the adapter announcement, but now it seems the adapter will be released for free.

Sony has set up an official support page for PSVR users who want the free adapter. All they have to do is go to the webpage and provide their PSVR processor unit serial number (which can be found on the rear panel of the VR headset), first name and last name, email address, shipping address, and phone number. The adapters will begin to ship in Japan near the end of October, the rest of Asia in early December, and the rest of the world starting in mid-November.

While PSVR users won't receive the adapters right away, it's great to know that Sony is giving away these adapters for free. Given how much PS5 accessories cost, it almost seems strange that Sony is offering them to users free of charge, but surely PSVR owners aren't complaining about the prospect of a free upgrade.

In any case, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for PSVR now that the PS5 is so close to releasing. It's obvious that games like Beat Saber will find their way onto PS5, but many are likely wondering what other VR games will release on PS5. Not only that, but also whether or not the PS5 will receive its own VR headset inn the future.

The PS5 is set to launch on November 12, 2020.
