Originally introduced during the PlayStation 3 era, the trophy system has remained a popular feature for players. Similar to the Xbox Achievements system, players earn in-game trophies for satisfying a certain objectives which can range from beating a level to pulling off some obscure move during gameplay. A true test of skill for many is earning a game's platinum trophy, indicating that all other trophies have been unlocked. While fans expected to see trophies continue onto the PlayStation 5 when it launches in November, Sony surprisingly announced a few changes to how they work.

In a new blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment director of product management, Toshimasa Aoki revealed how the company is changing the trophy system. The first big news for PlayStation trophy hunters is that the level system is increasing beyond the cap of 100. When the new update arrives, the level range becomes 1-999 and will automatically remap the player's trophy level to this new range based on the previously earned trophies. This means that all players will have a new level after this update based on the new system.

In addition to the level range, trophies have a completely new calculation system which Sony promises will be more rewarding. Players on the lower end of the scale will level faster while all levels will increase more consistently than before. In addition, platinum trophies are now worth more towards progression levels as well, which should please trophy hunters.

The last big update to the trophy system are the icons associated with player levels. Players between levels 1-299 will be in the Bronze range, 300-599 in the Silver range, 600-998 in Gold, and then the high level players at 999 will be Platinum. Each range has three different icons to show how far along each player is in this category, with more flair added to the icon the higher the range that are in.

Thankfully, this new trophy system is going to be updated system side starting later tonight for North America and into tomorrow, October 8, for Europe. The move will likely be a welcomed one for PlayStation fans as the company is a little over a month away from finally launching the PS5. This new trophy system will move to the new hardware, bringing everyone's already unlocked trophies with it. With a heap of new titles launching on PS5 like the Demon's Souls remake, player's should have no trouble increasing their scores even higher over the next few months.
