As many PlayStation fans will likely attest, the last few years for Sony have been absolutely stellar in terms of PS4 exclusive releases. From Naughty Dog's Uncharted 4 to Insomniac Games' Spider-Man, owners of the tech firm's current generation console have a slew of fantastic PS4-only titles from which to choose. This type of steady content production from the company has certainly primed many fans to expect a blockbuster showing at the next annual PlayStation Experience. Unfortunately, though, it looks as if there won't be an PSX held in 2018.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden, the company will not hold a PlayStation Experience in 2018, as it does not want to build fan anticipation when there isn't much actual news to deliver. As stated by the SIE executive around the 11:05 mark in the interview below, "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door . . . we wouldn't have enough to bring people altogether in some location in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it."

While there will surely be plenty of PlayStation fans disappointed by the lack of PSX 2018, that doesn't necessarily mean Sony has nothing substantial in the pipeline for next year and beyond. For instance, Media Molecule's Dreams is still on the way, and Bend Studio's Days Gone is slated for release in early 2019. What's more is that other highly anticipated games like Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Part 2 are still in development, too.

All things considered, it will be interesting to see how PlayStation's fan base as a whole reacts to there being no PSX in 2018, as there had undoubtedly been plenty of players hoping for some big, surprise announcements later this year. So, with no PSX 2018 on the books, lots of gamers will be turning their attention toward the reveals coming out of the recently confirmed Xbox X0 event to find out if Microsoft has any major news to share that will rival the PS4's future lineup of titles from Sony.
