Having sold over one million units around the globe, Sony's virtual reality headset, the PlayStation VR, is somewhat of a success. Sony has a lot of faith in the piece of hardware: so much faith in fact, that the company has now detailed an updated version in the wearable kit.

The new version of its PlayStation VR headset goes on sale in Japan on October 14 for $400 (a North American release date and pricing have yet to be announced). The updated version, model number CUH-ZVR2, has an improved design, as Sony explains, that "enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable."

Additionally, Sony has tweaked the hardware's processor unit so that it supports HDR (high dynamic range) pass through. In layman's terms, this means that PS4 Pro owners won't have to disconnect the unit in order to enjoy HDR-compatible content. Though, Sony highlights that this will only work when the headset has been switched off. Unfortunately, the company also confirms that the new processor unit will not work with the existing model of the headset. This means that current owners annoyed at this issue will have to fork out for a new headset altogether in order to fix it.

Admittedly, when Sony teased new hardware for PlayStation VR a year ago, and confirmed that it was constantly iterating its devices, this isn't what most fans were expecting. These are small quality of life changes as opposed to the total hardware shakeups that some may have been looking forward to.

However, these tweaks still go a long way, and they certainly seem to remove the frustrating elements from using the headset. It gives potential PlayStation VR owners fewer reasons to hesitate on picking one up and improves the comfort and ease of the headset. Comfort and ease of use were meant to be two key parts of this virtual reality gaming comeback, after all.

The new hardware model also arrives ahead of several other major PlayStation VR releases. The Final Fantasy 15: Monster of the Deep VR release is scheduled for next month, as is timed PlayStation VR exclusive, Skyrim VR. Sony is clearly convinced that its new piece of hardware will only grow in strength and plans to support it with content deals and hardware revisions alike. So, while this latest step may be small, it will hopefully lead to even bigger (and better) things.

PlayStation VR is available now.
