Sony Expects Move Sales to be a Slow Burn

In a stunning bit of anti-hype honesty, Sony senior vice president Ray Maguire said that they don’t really expect the PlayStation 3’s new motion experience, PlayStation Move, to exactly fly off the shelves upon its release. Psssst, hey Ray. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Neither do I. In fact, judging by the general buzz, or lack thereof, surrounding Move, I’m betting most of us probably agree with you.

Let’s see just what Maguire had to say about the impending launch of Sony’s new add-on:

"Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn't with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful. As people saw the value when they tried it they told their friends. Their friends bought it. They told their friends. Word of mouth grew the marketplace. That's what I expect from Move as well."

Someone should let Mr. Maguire know that any comparison to the PS2’s EyeToy, even if only in the context of sales trends, is not a good thing. Talk like that is going to do nothing but conjure up images of goofy, arm-flailing party games and wonky snowboarding controls in the minds of many gamers, all but ensuring their money stays planted securely in their wallets.

Ok, we get it. After a fairly soft PS3 launch, and the abysmal performance of the pretty much dead-on-arrival PSPgo, Sony has had a slice of humble pie and probably wants to play it safe with the Move's pre-launch rhetoric. Indeed, they have faith that once people get the unit in their sweaty, Dorito-stained hands, the word of its motion supremacy will spread, but seriously, Sony, this type of talk isn’t going to inspire the masses to drop the cash on your waggle-wares in the first place.

Obviously, all companies eager to sell us something are pretty much damned if they do and damned if they don’t when it comes to hyping a new product. If they double-stamp that hype train ticket on the full ride to frenzied excitement-town and the product fails, they end up with cake on their face. If they take the opposite approach and rely solely on the device itself to do the talking and the product still fails, they get to wonder whether or not some more positive buzz would have helped their numbers. I’m just not sure linking Move to a device that most gamers only have a passing regard for is a great idea any way you slice it.

Sound off Ranters! All you “hardcore” gamers wanted a Wii HD; well here it is. Are you going to prove this guy wrong and grab a PlayStation Move bundle on its September 19th launch date? Or has Ray Maguire just made the understatement of the year?
