Sony's highly anticipated reveal event for PlayStation 5 games is coming up. The official PlayStation Twitter account dropped a video on May 29 officially announcing the event, and something in the video surprised some fans.
The new controller for the PS5, the DualSense, is an interesting departure from the DualShock that fans have been using for the PS2, PS3, and PS4. When Sony revealed the DualSense last month, fans were shocked to see a two-toned black and white controller after playing with three previous console generations of solid black. However, the video in Sony's reveal event tweet is making some fans wonder whether Sony plans to stick with the announced two-toned controller at all.
Fan edits of the DualSense images in a more traditional solid black started flooding the Internet after Sony's announcement. The interesting thing about Sony's May 29 video is that the upcoming controller looks a lot more like fan edits of a black DualSense than of the official two-toned reveal. Of course, it may just be a trick of dramatic lighting, but it's hard for even the harshest shadows to render a bright white the same as an adjacent deep black.
The black and white DualSense has been the source of plenty of fan ridicule and memes, as well as criticism that it looks too much like the Xbox controller. Some people are fans of the new design, but the reaction overall is divisive and mixed. Enough people dislike the controller and are vocal about it that Sony might be reconsidering its initial design. Ot, the two-toned initial design could have never been Sony's intention in the first place.
One theory is that the two-toned controller was a test design, and that Sony was trying to gauge its audience's reactions to a departure from their standard black controller. The black controller might be the final design, now that Sony has seen the mixed bag of community reactions and could be deciding to backtrack and play it safe. Or, Sony could've been planning all along to have a black controller launch first and release the black-and-white design later with other controller color options.
Fans will have to wait until June 4 to see what more information Sony has to offer. However, whether the controller ends up launching as classic black or as two-toned black and white, the important new features will be the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Fans may be divided on what color the controller should be and whether black and white is too risky, but the elements that'll really make or break the DualSense is the ease of play. For most people, that will have to wait beyond June 4.
The PlayStation 5 will be available to play holiday 2020.
