Fans of Sony's PlayStation VR headset have been looking forward to the company's successor to the original device, the PS VR2, for quite a long time now, even though there's been precious little information about its release. The device received its initial announcement a while ago, and those who had the opportunity to give the original a try are eager to give the new headset a whirl, too.

Thankfully, this waiting game now has an end date in sight, as the company is finally sharing some concrete information about the gadget. Sony's Instagram account recently posted an official launch window announcement for the PS VR2, revealing that the headset will be getting released sometime in early 2023.

Even though VR is yet to enter mainstream gaming in a truly meaningful capacity, PlayStation is committed to quality PS VR experiences through and through. The company reiterated this dedication when PS VR2 was announced, describing its subsequent launch window as a "strategic opportunity" for PlayStation. Now that the official PlayStation Instagram has made the release window announcement, it's likely that Sony will be making a substantial VR push towards the end of 2022 to market its headset.

Earlier this year, Sony revealed the PS VR2 user interface, showing marked improvements compared to its immediate predecessor. The all-new See-Through View, for one, will allow players to easily and reliably see their surroundings without taking the headset off. Users can also leverage their PS VR2 Sense controllers to define the borders of their playing area, which should be extremely helpful for those players who might have space constraints in their gaming rooms.

Specs-wise, PS VR2 compares very favorably to PS VR. Users can expect an improved rendering resolution and HDR features, as well as significantly fewer cables to worry about while playing. All of this is almost certainly going to combine to make for a far superior gaming experience in most respects. At the same time, it goes without saying that games will be what make or break Sony's new headset.

While it's to be expected that the new PS VR will come with its own suite of entirely new VR experiences, some classic PS VR titles should receive PS VR2 upgrades along the way, too. Sony has been remarkably tight-lipped about the launch window lineup for the new headset, but it's almost certain that the company will be showing more of PS VR2's day-one game lineup in the coming weeks and months.

PlayStation VR2 is launching early in 2023.
