Sony took part in Black Friday in a big way this year, outlining huge discounts and deals on PS4 consoles and PlayStation VR headset bundles. New comments by one executive at the company now reveal exactly how well these savings went down with fans and shoppers.

Speaking to CNBC, the head of the PlayStation Network, Eric Lempel, revealed that Black Friday 2017 was the "biggest Black Friday in PlayStation history." During the annual shopping holiday Sony "sold more consoles than we ever have in our 22-year history," said Lempel. The Sony executive went on to note that plenty of new PS4 owners have gone on to purchase PlayStation Plus subscriptions too as they'll get "a lot of value" out of the service. It means that Sony benefits from the Black Friday console purchases twofold.

On the PlayStation VR Black Friday bundle, Lempel said that "consumers absolutely love [VR technology]," suggesting that it wasn't just consoles and PlayStation Plus subscriptions that shoppers were eager to buy. Sony definitely doesn't just see its VR headset as an accessory, explained Lempel, who also added that "there's a lot more to come." PS VR may have just gotten games like Skyrim VR, but Sony is just "scratching the surface" with its virtual reality plans right now, revealed the executive.

The strong Black Friday performance of PS4 consoles and PS VR hardware comes just ahead of PlayStation Experience 2017. That event is taking place in early December and will give Sony another chance to appeal to those who haven't yet made the jump to the PlayStation brand. It could also sway those who are considering buying an Xbox One X instead of a PS4 Pro.

The PlayStation Experience 2017 event should also give new PS4 and PS VR owners some added confidence in the brand, letting them know that they've made the right decision. Sony is expected to reveal plenty of information about hotly anticipated PS4 exclusives, possibly including new information about The Last of Us Part Two and God of War.

Letting fans know that there will be lots of exciting things for them to play and experience in future is important, lest players decide to trade those PS4 consoles and PS VR headsets in. But it also means that they will continue to be PlayStation Plus subscribers, which is an increasingly important part of the PlayStation business. New owners and longstanding fans alike will be looking forward to seeing how things unfold.
