Sony Reveals Black Friday Was Most Successful in History

By | 11 months ago

Sony confirms that Black Friday 2015 was a massive success for the company and speculates about whether or not the PS4 may be able to eventually outsell the PS2.

A lot of gamers did a lot of shopping on Black Friday this year. Although the initial mad rush to pick up current gen consoles came a few years ago when the Xbox One and PS4 were released, this year the prices have dropped down and the number of exciting games unavailable on PS3 and Xbox 360 have gone up. This perfect storm of circumstances made it a perfect opportunity for many shoppers to finally bite the bullet and pick up a new console. According to Sony, more shoppers purchased Sony made consoles on Black Friday 2015 than ever before.

Sony president and global chief executive Andrew House revealed to Financial Times that Black Friday 2015 was the most successful in the company’s history. House went on to explain that Sony is trying to benchmark against the success of the PS2 and, if possible, accomplish the impressive task of eventually outselling the incredibly popular console from 2000.

It’s no surprise to hear that Sony is happy with its sales over the Thanksgiving weekend after initial consumer reports indicated that the PS4 was the most popular console on Black Friday. The initial research suggested that Sony successfully cut into Microsoft’s sales and moved more consoles than expected thanks to quality bundles and competitive price cuts.

Despite the popularity of the PS4 and its consistent ability to outsell the Xbox One, overtaking the PS2 in terms of sales is an incredibly difficult task to achieve. The PS2 existed in a different era and Sony is well aware of how much the hardware landscape has changed in the 16 years since the PS2’s launch. When asked about outselling the PS2, House’s response fell short of optimism…

House acknowledged that outselling the PS2 will be a difficult task due to the fact that that consumers expect quicker innovation within the industry compared to when the PS2 was on the market. Although the PS4 is supposed to have a ten year lifespan, many gamers are already looking forward and thinking about whether or not it might be worth waiting to see what Sony’s next console looks like. Although Nintendo is a generation behind Sony and Microsoft in terms of raw console power, the fact that the Nintendo NX is expected to ship in 2016 may make many gamers think the next console generation is on the way.

During the end of 2015, it seems like the Xbox One and PS4 are just beginning to reach the potential of the current console generation. With games like Uncharted 4 on the way in 2016, it is very possible that the current generation is just about to hit its stride and start delivering on all fronts.

What do you think about the PS4’s potential to outsell the PS2? Do you think it’s a strong enough console? Let us know in the comments.
