First-Party games are usually integral to a platform holder advertising why a potential buyer would want to purchase their console. A console needs games to be played on it for entertainment, and exclusives help to sell a specific console or platform. A First-Party game specifically is when a game is developed and published by the company responsible for the platform on which it is released. Many of the Nintendo Switch exclusive games, for example, are developed and published by Nintendo themselves.

Microsoft also has what are termed Xbox-exclusives, which are games that are released either for Windows or Xbox owners. Halo Infinite, for example will only be available for those with access to either of those platforms. Sony have been reportedly investing large amounts of money in First-Party studios since 2021, and now it seems that those investments are coming to fruition, as it has been revealed that no less than 17 studios will be a part of "PlayStation Studios," a collaboration creating First-Party games for the PlayStation platform.

The reveal of Sony having 17 studios working on first party titles came via CES 2022, an event that has seen new Razer gaming laptops, PlayStation VR2 and other big reveals for the consumer electronics and gaming industries. Jim Ryan, PlayStation CEO, took to the stage yesterday and announced that a large number of studios would be joining Sony to work on first party exclusives for the PlayStation. While Xbox boasts a total of 22 studios working on their first party titles, Sony's number of studios is a respectable one.

Fans were quick to point out that although 17 studios were listed as part of PlayStation Studios, a few of these developers would not be making games independently, and would be support studios and studios involved with porting PlayStation games to PC. Though PlayStation exclusives historically remained on PlayStation consoles, recently older PlayStation first-party games have made the jump to PC. Horizon: Zero Dawn released in August 2020 for the PC, and God of War is set to become available on PC later this year.

Jim Ryan was not the only person to tease multiple upcoming projects. Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog, the studio behind PlayStation exclusives such as The Last of Us and Uncharted appeared at the tech conference to tease multiple new game projects after praising the live-action rendition of Uncharted, which stars Spider-Man actor Tom Holland as a younger Nathan Drake.
