The upcoming game Sons of the Forest has a lot of horror fans excited, and the latest trailer has only increased this excitement. The Forest, released in 2014, is a terrifying survival horror title in which players must gather resources in order to build what they need to fend off hordes of grotesque monsters and survive on a hostile peninsula. The sequel appears to be upping the ante and adding a slew of new, frightening enemies to contend with. The latest trailer for Sons of the Forest also gave a release date of May 20th, 2022, so fans don't have long to wait until they'll be face to face with these new creatures.

In The Forest, the enemies came in two forms: mutants and cannibals. Both are returning for the sequel, but the mutants, in particular, are very different from the variety in the first game. Mutants in The Forest took came in a handful different types, which are Virginia, Armsy, Cowman, Worm, mutant babies, and variations of these. The previous trailers for Sons of the Forest showed a range of mutants and cannibals, and the latest trailer indicates that the game will have a diverse and terrifying range of enemies.

Enemies in Previous Sons of the Forest Trailers

Sons of the Forest was first announced at the Game Awards in 2019 with a brief reveal trailer. While details of the game were scarce at this point, the trailer did introduce the new cave cannibals, who seem to have no eyes and appear only in caves. A mysterious, non-hostile mutant woman was also seen in this reveal trailer, who developers have confirmed they call Virginia. She has multiple limbs like the Virginia mutants from the previous game, but appears to retain a lot more of her humanity. Potential mutant allies indicate how diversified the mutants on the peninsula have become in this sequel.

A gameplay trailer released last year gave some more indication as to how the enemies have changed. Masked cannibals appear again, but they seem to function differently to the first game, and the player can even infiltrate their ranks. The mutants that are shown in this trailer certainly stole the show, though, with distinct new forms of the enemies seen. Sons of the Forest developers have named these Fingers and Twins, as shown above, while another mutant that seems to blend into trees has been called Stillroot by fans.

The most recent trailer shows multiple conjoined enemies similar to the Twins that have fans wondering whether there'll be a wider array of conjoined mutants. The most terrifying of these is certainly the tall conjoined mutant, shown above, that is connected at the torso and towers above the player. Another possible variant of the Twins is seen crawling around cave ceilings, so players should expect these enemies to attack from anywhere. Fingers also returns in the latest trailer and is shown in a cave this time.

Mutant babies reappear from the first game, this time accompanied by an enormous blob-like mutant, which is also shown above. While this mutant is slow-moving, it appears to be very powerful, and the mutant babies only increase the threat. It seems like hostile animals will return as well, such as a shark seen in the trailer. What's clear from all the trailers so far is players can expect a huge variety of new enemies, and it's likely that only a fraction of them have been seen in the trailers. In particular, the potential mutant allies will add interesting new dynamics to surviving on the peninsula. While it's unclear exactly who the player will be controlling in Sons of the Forest, the latest trailer has some interesting clues near the end, and the anticipation for the game is reaching an all-time high.

Sons of the Forest is set to release on May 20th, 2022.
