As players will soon realize, the Island in Sons Of The Forest is a dangerous place. With dangers hiding in every bush, lurking in every underground cavern, or peeking out from behind every tree, players will find themselves in combat often, sometimes by being ambushed or attacked from behind.

Naturally, the player will want to make sure they’ve got the best protection possible to deal with the threats they’re facing. While they may start their journey without any form of defense, there’s a variety of armor sets and pieces that players can craft or find in the wilderness to boost their survivability. Here are the best armor types in Sons Of The Forest, and how to obtain them.

6 Leaf Armor

Sons Of The Forest Leaf Armor

It will not come as a surprise that Leaf Armor is the weakest armor type in the game. Leaf Armor is crafted by combining some leaves with a piece of cloth, with ten pieces required in total to complete the armor set. Both these materials are relatively easy to find, with cloth being a common loot item, whereas leaves can be cut down from any nearby bush.

As players might expect, while Leaf Armor pieces are incredibly easy to craft, and do provide some kind of camouflage, they don’t add much at all in terms of protection. Still, wearing this armor type is better than wearing nothing at all, and given that players don’t need to go out of their way to craft it, they might as well make use of it when starting out.

5 Hide Armor

A mid-level armor piece, Hide Armor is generally not worth the benefits it provides. Players can craft it by combining cloth with two animal hides, and while cloth is relatively easy to come by, animal hides require the player to go hunting. This can be a whole headache in itself, as players will often need ranged weapons such as the crossbow to successfully bring down their prey.

If they manage to craft ten pieces, players will benefit from Hide Armor’s slightly increased protection, although most other pieces besides Leaf Armor will still provide more. Hide Armor also enhances the player’s stealth capabilities, allowing them to avoid confrontation with the various cannibals and mutants that wander the land.

4 Golden Armor

Golden Armor is an item that players obtain later on in the game. It is required to finish the main story and can be found in a bunker southeast of the island. Players will need the maintenance keycard to gain access to this area, which is where the Golden Mask and Katana will also be located.

Surprisingly, Golden Armor doesn’t offer a whole lot of protection. While it may be the only set that covers the player from head to toe and the only armor that can’t be damaged or broken, it is simply inferior to other options. Not to mention that it can only be retrieved late-game, and players should have better gear equipped by then.

3 Bone Armor

The best armor type to use in the early game, Bone Armor is both effective and easy to craft. Players need to simply combine four bones with one rope and one piece of tape, all of which should be relatively easy to acquire. Bones can be taken from the corpses of cannibals by killing and burning them, whereas rope and tape are common loot items.

It shouldn’t take long to get a full set of ten pieces, nor is it highly dangerous to do so, essentially making Bone Armor a direct upgrade from Leaf Armor. It even provides better protection than Hide Armor, while also being more straightforward to obtain. Overall, it’s a decent set of armor that players can’t go wrong with, especially during their first days on the island.

2 Tech Armor

Sons Of The Forest Printing Tech Mesh

Tech Armor is theoretically the best armor in the game, boasting the highest protective stats of them all. Despite this, it’s very difficult to acquire and isn’t actually the most practical armor for players to equip. To craft just one piece, players must collect duct tape, batteries, a wire, and a circuit board. Then comes the hardest part – the Tech Mesh. This futuristic material can only be created by finding a 3D printer, adding enough printer resin, and manually printing it out.

With only a few locations where 3D printers can be found, and a limited supply of printer resin, crafting Tech Armor can be an arduous task. It can even get damaged and break, requiring the player to find even more printer resin to replace it. If players have the resources available, then they shouldn’t hesitate to wear it, but if not, there are less expensive and more useful options out there.

1 Creepy Armor

Sons Of The Forest Creepy Armor

Not far behind the protective qualities of Tech Armor, Creepy Armor is cheaper to obtain, if a little more dangerous. Players will need to venture into a cave system and kill creepies, the strange, mutated creatures that are more powerful and distinct from regular cannibals. Skinning their corpses will supply one piece of creepy armor each, with no need to collect any other materials for crafting.

While these foes can be nasty if players aren’t prepared, they’re relatively straightforward for well-equipped players to take down and are well worth the trouble. Creepy Armor is one of the most effective sets in the game and is easy to both acquire and replace, making it an ideal choice for players hoping to survive their time on the island.
