While a certain live-action version of Sonic the Hedgehog may have made an unintentionally big splash of bad feedback for the Blue Blur, that doesn't mean that the gaming icon's official Twitter account can't make a few jokes of its own. In fact, the brand's page has decided to have a little fun with one of the biggest companies in the games industry.

EA recently claimed that it doesn't sell loot boxes, instead opting to call them "surprise mechanics" similar to those found in Kinder Surprise Eggs and LOL Dolls. The statement immediately resulted in jokes from just about every corner of the internet, with many firing off about how ridiculous the statement actually is. The Sonic Twitter didn't directly call out EA, but the post on the character's page certainly isn't subtle.

In a quote-tweet of an earlier post, the page wrote, "We are pleased to announce 'surprise mechanics' for Sonic Horses!" The post continues, "You can now buy a 'Surprise' for only 5 SonicBuxx™, or our new 'Gaggle of Surprises' package for 200 SonicBuxx™!"

The joke is an obvious nod to EA's statement and an admittedly funny one at that. While it may draw some eye rolls from the higher-ups at both Sega and EA, it likely won't create animosity between the two companies. After all, EA did play a major role in the creation of anti-loot box legislation that has been popping up in the US and around the world, so it has to expect some potshots to be taken.

The Sonic brand may not be the best one to make jokes at others' expense right now, though, as the live action movie based on the character has drawn significant backlash, even prompting a complete redesign of Sonic's model in the movie.

Needless to say, EA's statement on loot boxes has been seen as ridiculous by many, and it seems highly unlikely that the court will actually look at the company's loot boxes the same way it does other randomized toys. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if other video game social media pages poke fun at EA over the issue.
