The man behind the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account announced that he is stepping down after five iconic years. While new Sonic game announcements have been delayed because of COVID-19, fans have kept themselves entertained by looking at the account's ridiculous but often hilarious posts.

In a post on Twitter today, Aaron Webber, the man in charge of the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account, confirmed that he is moving to a new role at Sega and would no longer be tweeting for the popular blue character. Webber's farewell post spoke about the "tough spot" Sonic was in when he took over in 2015, as the newest Sonic the Hedgehog game had "failed" and Sega had shut its San Francisco office. The social media manager described how he made the "risky career move" to stop running Sonic's tweets by the head office in Japan and to just post whatever he felt would work.

There have been countless tweets of brilliance from the Sonic the Hedgehog account. There was the time when Webber posted a self-own, dunking on the widely disliked game, Sonic '06. Another time he made a "Deez Nuts" joke, there was a Dr. Eggman takeover, and a tweet from April 2020 where he jumped in on the "nature is healing" COVID-19 meme.

There was also Sonic the Hedgehog's friendship with games critic Jim Sterling. Sterling, who is known for his videos criticizing game developers and things like loot boxes, once wrote a review giving Sonic Colors just 4.5 out of 10. After the review was published, Sega accidentally sent Sterling a giant Sonic Colors poster. In a tweet from Webber's Sonic the Hedgehog, five years after Sega sent out that poster, the account responded to Sterling's negative Sonic Boom tweet joking that he'd be sent another Sonic Colors poster.

There was also the time when Sonic the Hedgehog completely dunked on Mighty No. 9. While Mighty No. 9 reviews were mostly negative, few expected Sonic the Hedgehog to shade the game on Twitter, joking that the game was "better than nothing." The development team behind Mighty No. 9 had said that the game was "better than nothing" in a stream done earlier that day, seemingly telling fans to lower their expectations, but that didn't stop it from being very funny when Sonic the Hedgehog repeated it.

Since Webber began tweeting for Sonic the Hedgehog, there have been several other great gaming brands posting funny things on Twitter. A popular choice is Devolver Digital, which jokes about delaying Cyberpunk 2077 and hosts weird E3 press conferences. Sony's Shuhei Yoshida is also known for his responses to fans. Gaming Twitter can be a really good time, and as Webber hands the account to his "talented" Sega coworkers, the Sonic the Hedgehog account will keep on being part of it.
