The redesign of Sonic in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been mostly well-received by fans of the series and currently has things looking relatively up for the film. One excited fan, in particular, expressed their excitement by posting a Shadow the Hedgehog movie rendition to Reddit.
The Shadow the Hedgehog design comes from Reddit user GameKyuubi. Boiled down, the picture of Shadow is actually a still from the most recent trailer, using Shadow's fur colors instead of Sonic's.
As can be seen, GameKyuubi replaced Sonic's blue fur with black and altered the color of Shadow's eyes and wristbands. They also inserted an unflattering picture of the movie's original Sonic design behind the car window for good measure.
When Reddit user beclark_2001_2 criticized the above image due to Shadow's smile, GameKyuubi responded in kind with an altered image. The below picture shows a Shadow design that is a bit more accurate.
While Shadow's smile technically remains unaltered, the modification of his upper eyelids are a bit more accurate compared to the character's design from his game appearances. Above all, the look is very faithful to the Shadow gamers know from the 3D Sonic titles.
While the movie isn't set to feature Shadow the Hedgehog, many are at least a little bit more excited for the film due to Sonic's more faithful redesign. Unfortunately, this does not include the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, who stated that he would have at least wanted to see "a special DVD version of the movie which used the old design." Oddly, his opinion seems to be an unpopular one among the diehard Sonic fans, who much prefer the blue blur's new, more game-adherent redesign.
While there's no sequel currently slated for the movie, Shadow's above designs are enough to make one consider the possibilities. In the upcoming movie, the antagonist is set to be Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, but films made after it could very well feature the series' later-introduced antagonists like Shadow the Hedgehog.
Sonic the Hedgehog will release in theaters on February 14, 2020.
