Although many film fans are already predicting that Detective Pikachu is going to break the video game movie curse, fans haven't been quite as optimistic about the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie based on early concept art (that many fans disliked) and other leaks. Today marks the reveal of the first actual footage from the film, so now fans can finally see how the project is shaping up.

The first trailer is full of sound effects that are sure to make 90s gamers feel a tinge of nostalgia even before the blue speedster enters the frame. The trailer goes on to introduce the core cast of characters including Sonic himself, Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik, and James Marsden as the human who will team up with Sonic during the adventure.

The trailer has only been online since this morning, so reactions are still pouring in, as fans process this live-action CGI hybrid approach to bringing the iconic Sega mascot to the big screen.

The first trailer definitely isn't generating the same kind of positive buzz that Detective Pikachu's trailer did, but it may be unfair to compare the two projects. The early concept art for Sonic seems to lineup with what we're seeing here, so it will be interesting to see if this aesthetic grows on audiences as they see Sonic in motion or if they still dislike this character design.

If nothing else, the trailer is sure to leave everyone very curious about how the decision was made to use Gangsta's Paradise as the background music...

Be sure to check back in the coming weeks for more Sonic the Hedgehog news, footage, and updates.
