With the recent success of Sonic Mania, Sega and Sonic fans have much to look forward to in the gaming spectrum, but what about the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie? Anticipating fans will be excited to know that their wait is now shorter than expected.

In 2014, Sony first announced plans to introduce Sega's beloved Sonic to the movie screen. Having acquired the rights in 2013, Sony later abandoned the project, leaving Paramount Pictures the ability to purchase the rights. The Sonic The Hedgehog movie, originally set to release this year by Sony, was later postponed to 2019 due to the production shift.

The November 15, 2019 release date announced by Paramount has now, too, undergone a change. After a calendar shift involving multiple future films, including Terminator 6, Sonic The Hedgehog is now scheduled to release on November 8, 2019. Deadpool director, Tim Miller, happens to be both directing Terminator 6 and producing Sonic The Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog has made some interesting moves in the casting scene. The live-action movie with implemented CGI elements has famously cast Jim Carrey, as well as Ben Schwartz and James Marsden. The casting for the character of Tom Wachowski (police officer) came as a surprise to many who thought Paul Rudd would receive the role. Instead, the part has been given to James Marsden, who is most known for his roles in X-Men, Enchanted, and Westworld. Ben Schwartz, best known as Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation, will be the voice for Sonic. Though the most reported casting was that of Jim Carrey as 'Eggman'.

Here is a list of the announced cast and their known characters:

  • Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik
  • Ben Schwartz as The voice of Sonic
  • James Marsden as Tom Wachowski
  • Neal McDonough
  • Tika Sumpter
  • Adam Pally
  • Natasha Rothwell
  • Debs Howard
  • Melody Nosipho Niemann

All in all, the cast and crew should deliver an enjoyable, light-hearted film. Having Tim Miller at the helm of production gives the film the potential to provide quality content, with the cast to back it up. Hopes are that the combination of Jim Carrey And Tim Miller will make for good humor and a good plot. Though the merger of live-action and CGI Sonic will be a hard one to digest.

Sonic The Hedgehog is set to hit the screens on November 8, 2019.
