The Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been filling out its cast, with James Marsden playing a small town sheriff named Tom Wachowski and Jim Carrey starring as Dr. Robotnik/Eggman. Until today, the title role still had yet to be filled, but we now know who is playing the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in the upcoming film.

It's been announced that actor and comedian Ben Schwartz, perhaps best known for his work on Parks and Recreation as the obnoxious Jean-Realphio, will be playing the voice of Sonic in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Schwartz took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm for the film, saying that he is "beyond excited" about the movie and that it will be "amazing." Whether or not it lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but it's nice to see that Schwartz seems genuinely confident about the project.

Check out Schwartz's tweet about being cast as Sonic the Hedgehog right here:

Some Sonic the Hedgehog fans may not be familiar with Schwartz, and may be worried about his ability to do Sonic justice on the big screen. However, it's worth pointing out that Schwartz has an extensive history with voice acting, having done work for critically-acclaimed animated shows like Bob's BurgersBoJack Horseman, the DuckTales reboot, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more.

In the meantime, there is still very little we know about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie besides its main cast and a vague plot outline. Apparently the film will be about Sonic teaming up with Marsden's sheriff character to take on Dr. Eggman, but Eggman's plan has yet to be revealed, and it's also unclear how exactly Sonic ends up in the "real" world. We also don't know whether or not any other characters from the franchise will make an appearance, like Sonic's friend Tails or the brash Knuckles the Echidna.

While there's still a lot we don't know about the Sonic the Hedgehog film, we do know that at least one familiar location from the games will be showing up in the movie in the form of the Green Hill Zone, which will be represented as the town Green Hills. It will be interesting to learn if other Sonic the Hedgehog levels are adapted for the film, and how else the filmmakers plan on appealing to fans of the franchise.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will release in theaters on November 15, 2019.
