As part of the 30th-anniversary celebration for Sonic the Hedgehog, IDW Publishing and Sega announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog comic to be released in June, closer to the original game's release date of June 23rd. The comic will be an 80-page issue with three different light-hearted stories throughout.

When news of the Sonic comic broke last week, details were relatively scarce, but now, a panel hosted by IDW and posted to YouTube gives fans a little more to work with. The headlining story will be Seasons of Chaos, written by Mark Flynn with art by Aaron Hammerstrom and Reggie Graham. Flynn described the story as a melodrama-free narrative that feels akin to the Sonic Mania Adventures cartoons. He also teased that "a bunch" of classic characters will make appearances, guaranteeing fans of course Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, but also Mighty, Ray, Metal Sonic, and tons of others.

While it's easy to focus on Sonic's birthday, Dr. Eggman is not one to be forgotten easily. Gale Gilligan's story, Dr. Eggman's Birthday, with art by Thomas Rothlisberger and Nathalie Fourdraine, will be centered around Sonic's villainous counterpart. With each passing year acting as a reminder of his futile efforts to catch Sonic, Dr. Eggman will spend his birthday as he normally does, in total frustration.

The third story in the comic is titled Sonic Learns to Drive written by brother team Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy with art by Mauro Fonseca. While the team did not join the panel, fans can likely expect another light-hearted romp.

For fans who cannot get enough, another Sonic comic is planned for Free Comic Book Day 2021, also written by Gale Gilligan. As well, JAKKS Pacific has developed a fully articulated Sonic figure to celebrate the speedster's birthday.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary comic is expected for June 2021.
