As the Sonic the Hedgehog films prove, there are certain inevitabilities when it comes to media. There will always be another Marvel movie or show, and the same can be applied to properties like Star Wars (at least until it stops making them money). However, it seems like every year adds another franchise to that list of perpetuity.
Interestingly enough, while the beloved Sonic the Hedgehog series has essentially been part of that elite group for decades in the video game world, it seems the blue blur may have successfully traversed the thin digital line into the movie business. After 2 extremely well-received Sonic the Hedgehog movies just over the past few years, it almost seemed like a foregone conclusion that there would be a third. Turns out, those who predicted such a thing were right on the money.
Paramount has finally come out and confirmed the release date for the upcoming threequel. Casting their line quite a ways into the future, the studio now confirms that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is aiming to release theatrically on December 20th, 2024. That will put it right in a prime spot for some holiday action, which is definitely the type of slot that this sort of movie would thrive in. However, what will change this time around, and who else might show up in Sonic 3?
2020's Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprise hit on its own, raking in the cash while changing things up quite a bit from the games that inspired it. The film starred Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, who accidentally ends up on Earth after escaping through a portal from an attack on his home planet. He eventually meets and befriends local sheriff Tom (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter). However, his new life is threatened when Jim Carrey's eccentric roboticist Dr. Robotnik discovers and tries to capture Sonic for his own experiments.
In 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic has settled into his new life with Tom and Maddie while trying to find his purpose, only for Robotnik to return after being flung to a faraway planet at the end of the previous film. This time, Sonic is joined by his new fox friend Miles "Tails" Prower (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey), who traveled to Earth to find and warn him about a new threat. That threat comes from Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba), who has been manipulated by Robotnik into helping him.
The end of the 2nd film saw Robotnik defeated once again, and Carrey has expressed his wishes to possibly retire from acting. So it's unclear what might happen to the character in the upcoming follow-up. Whatever happens, it's sure to be another fun romp for the family.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to release on December 20th, 2024.
