While the Sonic The Hedgehog film universe has done a great deal of expanding with the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, there is still much more that can be done. Introducing Knuckles, Tails, and teasing the possibility of more to come, the now-confirmed threequel is likely to bring more characters from the games to the big screen.

While the games and TV shows from the past have a wealth of characters that could be included, there are some more likely to translate to a live-action cinematic universe better than others.

7 Big The Cat

Big The Cat

While many Sonic characters that are better known to mainstream audiences are more likely to appear in the films, Big The Cat would be an extremely fun choice. Knuckles and Tails have already appeared, and Shadow is set to arrive, although we still don't know who will play him. But Big The Cat brings with him a certain innocent, quiet sidekick role that the films have been missing.

While it may seem like his character from the games is lacking, it begs for reinvention. A character like Big can easily be played off similarly to Baymax from Big Hero 6 for example, creating someone lovable and fresh for fans who are tired of seeing similar personalities in Sonic characters.

6 Amy Rose

Amy Rose

Amy Rose is a pink hedgehog who first appeared in Sonic The Hedgehog CD. She has frequently been portrayed in games as having a huge crush on Sonic and has surprisingly been left out of the films thus far. Amy is a popular character among fans, despite being described as embodying the Ms. Male Character stereotype.

The infamous Sonic Boom team of characters consisted of Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy. While the other three have already come together in the most recent film, it would be surprising to not bring Amy to the screen sooner rather than later.

5 Silver The Hedgehog

Silver The Hedgehog

Yet another hedgehog, Silver’s in-game backstory revolved around him coming from 200 years in the future to kill Sonic. As opposed to speed or strength, Silver has the ability to telekinetically lift and move objects with his mind, which allows him to hold his own in battle.

While Silver is a less well-received character than many others introduced in the games, the premise of his backstory and abilities could be an interesting one for a future film. Time travel seems like a ludicrous element to include given the real-world setting, but considering the material already used it could be an option for an adventure later than the threequel. It is difficult to know where the Sonic films plan on going next, but Silver would bring a fresh set of tropes to play with for sure.

4 Blaze The Cat

Blaze The Cat

If time travel is a difficult concept to introduce, at least it has already been popularized in mainstream media. As has the concept of multiversal travel. This has become much more popular between the recent releases of Everything Everywhere All At Once and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

Blaze The Cat is a character who could help the Sonic franchise engage in multiversal travel and stay as successful as it has been thus far. She is a princess that comes from another dimension, where she guards the sol emeralds. These being her universe’s version of the chaos emeralds, they could be a target by any number of villains that will require her to seek out the help of Sonic.

3 Rouge The Bat

Rouge The Bat's Evolution

If the films are looking for a different sort of character to anything used thus far, Rouge the Bat is an excellent choice. As opposed to Amy, who primarily serves in the games as a love interest, Rouge is a character that stands on her own. Self-billed as the world’s greatest treasure hunter, Rouge is often after valuable treasures and uses her “womanly ways” to get what she wants through manipulation.

Rouge would bring a strong female character to the film franchise with a dynamic that can easily shift from villain to hero to anti-heroic thorn in the side of Sonic and his friends. There are a lot of possibilities open with this character that would feel strange for others in the Sonic wheelhouse.

2 Sally Acorn

Sonic And Sally Acorn

A little less common amongst fans of purely Sonic games, Sally Acorn was a character popularized by the Sonic SatAM cartoon show, which featured Sonic and friends fighting as freedom fighters taking on Robotnik. While the show ended on a cliffhanger after a sudden cancellation, it has become a fan-favorite series.

Sally was a princess who co-led the series alongside Sonic and many fans considered her a better love interest for Sonic than Amy. Sally had more character to her outside seeking Sonic’s love and was a driven character in her own right. Including Sally would allow the Sonic films to produce more moments fans of the franchise will love.

1 Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic

While Metal Sonic might come off as being too similar a villain to Shadow, who is likely the upcoming villain for Sonic 3, it could be pitched differently. Firstly, it would make sense for Robotnik to create Metal Sonic in the wake of trying and failing to control Knuckles as a being that could match Sonic’s speed.

Creating a being undeniably faster than Sonic and easily controlled is one way for Jim Carrey’s character to return in a future installment with a vengeance. Metal Sonic was first introduced in this fashion, as a creation by Eggman to try and surpass Sonic. Metal Sonic’s weakness is his obsession with beating Sonic, even causing him to rebel against his creator on occasion, making him a dangerous final villain for the Sonic films to head toward, since fans have great ideas for Metal Sonic already.
