Sonic fans can celebrate a major milestone with Sega by downloading Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Steam, as the game is currently free on the video game digital distribution service.
Part of Sega's 60th anniversary celebration, Sonic 2 is among many games that Sega is discounting on Steam with a discount of up to 95% off of several games in the series including Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic 3D Blast, and Sonic Spinball.
Sonic 2 is often celebrated as one of the best 2D entries in the series since the game's original release on the Sega Genesis in 1992. The platformer introduced fans to many staples in the series including the addition of the Spin Dash move, more unique special stages, and the popular sidekick character, Tales.
Sonic the Hedgehog is months away from its 30th anniversary in 2021, with Sega recently revealing a 30th anniversary logo for the celebration. Currently, Sega has revealed new merchandise in part of the celebration such as new pins, several new POP figures and a new line of clothing. While nothing else is currently announced, it's expected that more game related announcements will be revealed next year.
In addition, a newly announced Sonic 30th anniversary encyclopedia is releasing next year showcasing the highs and lows of the series. The book will go into detail about the character throughout the years including some behind the scenes stories, detailed lore of the series, and backstory of the characters. Fans can expect info on the main series of games, the unique spin-offs, and Sonic's appearances in other games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is free on Steam until October 19.
