Sonic Origins is now available on every major gaming platform, bringing four classic Sonic the Hedgehog games into one complete package. This collection was marketed as a way for new players to experience the first games starring the Blue Blur in a convenient way. Along with remastering these retro games, Sonic Origins added some new features such as Mirror Mode and had animated cutscenes that connected all four titles together in its story mode.

The game also had a lot of hype behind it, as the developers behind the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania, Headcannon, confirmed its involvement with Sonic Origins shortly after its reveal. While many fans were excited to see Headcannon would be making the games a more polished experience, the reception of the current state of the game has been decidedly mixed by fans. A prominent member of Headcannon, Simon "Stealth" Thomley, spoke about the issues with its release.

In an extensive Twitter thread posted by the developer, he revealed a number of aspects regarding the Sonic Origins collection that left him and his team frustrated with the end product. He notes that the bugs were likely a result of the collection being transformed from a separate project into what it is now, along with crunch time to meet a deadline. Stealth acknowledges that the team made some mistakes working on it, and while he's proud of his team, he is also very unhappy with the game's current state, especially with the Sonic 3 and Knuckles portion.

Stealth notes that a lot of the game's submission period was also out of Headcannon's control, and when they asked to do some major fixes, his team wasn't allowed to implement them in time. Not only that, but when the team asked about delaying Sonic Origins, these requests were rebuffed, and he was told it "wasn't possible." Stealth also notes that while Headcannon still really wants these problems to be addressed, it seems that post-release updates and fixes might not even be in consideration.

These wrinkles with the collection not only cover the gameplay and visual bugs but other aspects as well. The changes to Sonic 3's soundtrack for Sonic Origins, in particular, saw a lot of flack from gamers, with many stating they were inferior to what was in the original game and the prototype Genesis versions. These changes have split the fan base, with many arguing between whether this is an enhanced version with some cool new features or a raw deal that offers worse versions of these classic Sonic games.

Sonic Origins is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
