Sonic the Hedgehog has developed quite the entourage over the decades, and though well over half of them are either forgettable or despised, there are plenty of fan favorites. One standout who has almost been around since the beginning is Sonic's unwanted girlfriend and hammer-wielding teammate Amy Rose.

Amy Rose, also known as Rosie the Rascal, was introduced in 1993's Sonic CD. She was playable in a couple of spin-off racing games before her proper gameplay debut in 1999's Sonic Adventure. Amy is a good-natured and energetic hedgehog who develops an all-consuming crush on Sonic, which leads her to follow him on all of his adventures. Unfortunately, in her early appearances, her infatuation with Sonic was her only character trait, but she's picked up a more identifiable personality over the years.

Updated on April 27th, 2022 by Joshua McCoy: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in theaters with substantial fanfare and tons of positive responses. Sonic and Amy haven't gotten the chance to interact in the films, as she has still been left by the wayside so far. Though plenty of new characters were revealed, and Tails and Knuckles were immediately beloved, Amy has not joined the cast yet. Despite that, the stellar box office performance of the film and Sega's apparent plans for expansion make it extremely likely that future projects will add Amy to the mix. The fastest-growing cinematic universe in the medium won't have to wait much longer before Amy Rose joins the party.

The Sonic Boom cartoon was probably her high point as a character, adding both an element of unhinged temperament and emotional maturity. Even her relationship with Sonic has become more nuanced. Amy is a much more complete character in her modern incarnations, and with her long-running key importance to the franchise, it's a foregone conclusion that she'll join the continuing Sonic movie universe.

Cindy Robinson

A seemingly obvious pick, yet one fraught with setbacks. Cindy Robinson has been the voice of Amy for over a decade now, beginning in Sonic Free Riders. She's the performer that brought the aforementioned franchise's best take on the character to life in Sonic Boom. Colleen O'Shaughnessey's surprising casting as Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set the precedent that the films could bring the series' regular voice cast into the new medium, a rarity in the industry.

However, Robinson, along with the long-time voice of Sonic Roger Craig Smith, announced that she would not be returning to the role after 11 years and at least 17 projects. Then again, shortly thereafter, both she and Smith were cast in the upcoming video game Sonic Frontiers, so it's hard to say where they are in the franchise. If Robinson decides she's not done with the role, after all, she's fantastic in the role and her history with the character would bring a ton to the film. Robinson can also be heard in recurring roles such as Makoto in the BlazBlue series or Operetta in Monster High.

Anna Kendrick

This beloved Pitch Perfect star has been in the industry for over twenty years and continues to be one of the most charming performers around. Kendrick is an award-winning talent with more than 50 credits under her belt. Though better known for her on-screen accolades, Kendrick is also an accomplished voice actor, in films such as Paranorman and the Trolls franchise. Kendrick would draw a ton of attention to the film, and bring her trademark brand of comedic likeability to the role.

Amy is a fun character because her primary traits are set, but the sliders of her personality are always in flux. Kendrick is a gifted performer who could bring out both her empathetic team therapist side and her unhinged aggressive side. Whichever way the film chose to portray Amy Rose, Anna Kendrick would be an obviously great choice for the role.

Kristen Schaal

On stage, she's one of the most engaging figures in alternative comedy. On-screen, she's an iconic supporting character in some of the generation's best sitcoms. In the vocal booth, she lends her extremely recognizable voice to iconic characters like Louise Belcher of Bob's Burgers and Mabel Pines of Gravity Falls.

Schaal has a voice like no other, fans can identify her within a line or two, but that works to her advantage. Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic in the films, is also an accomplished stage comedian. It would likely be a ton of fun to see the pair of them play off of one another, bringing more humor to Sonic and Amy's bizarre relationship. Schaal is a hilarious performer who would liven up the Sonic film universe.

Ellie Kemper

Best known as the title character in the beloved Netflix comedy series The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kemper is a hilarious performer with a disarmingly upbeat sense of humor. Her most iconic role alone would be solid bona fides for Amy Rose, but Kemper is a wonderful supporting actress in a variety of films and shows, from her recurring role in The Office to her voice acting credits in series like Sofia the First.

As a comedian, she worked with The Daily Show, writes for The Onion, and has made a name for herself in the sketch community. Kemper's trademark personality and well-established comedy chops make her a great choice to join the Sonic film series.

Alison Brie

This versatile and gifted actress has brought some of television's best-loved characters to life over her almost twenty-year-long career. Her role as Annie Edison in Community was as hilarious as it was powerful, commanding a very complex character and standing out amongst many great performers. Her performance in GLOW was a dynamic lead that sold real pathos throughout the show. She is an accomplished comedic actor, and her natural charm makes her a fantastic choice for the role of Amy Rose.

Kate Micucci

Universally beloved for her hilarious comedy band Garfunkel and Oates, Micucci is one of the most sought-after vocal performers in the world of cartoons. Perhaps best known for her role as Webby in the hit Duck Tales reboot, Micucci has a long history of solid performances in animated projects. From Sadie in Steven Universe to Velma in Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, her unique voice and spellbinding energy would be a perfect addition to the world of the Sonic the Hedgehog films.

Fans of Micucci's work can probably imagine her distinctive voice coming out of Amy Rose. It's almost distractingly similar to many of the classic vocal performances in the role. Micucci already sounds a bit like the character naturally, so her performance as Amy Rose would undoubtedly appeal to fans and newcomers alike. While the films have portrayed some characters almost identical to their source material and deviated from others, Micucci is a perfect middle ground. With long-established comedy chops in all ages and more mature material, Micucci would be a great addition to the Sonic film franchise. If fans can hear her in the role before she's even been cast, then she's probably a solid choice.

Kristen Bell

The star of The Good Place and Veronica Mars has one of the more unique voices on the big screen. Thankfully, she's also an extremely talented performer in the booth. Her best-known vocal role is undoubtedly Anna in Frozen, but she's made appearances in a variety of cartoon projects. Bell excels at expressing complex emotions through vocal performance, taking on the role of Amy would likely make her the most impressive performance of the group. Against Ben Schwartz's hilarious but heartfelt performance as Sonic, Bell would be a perfect comedic foil and possible romantic interest.

Bell is an immensely talented comedic performer, with dozens of iconic and hilarious roles under her belt. Her unique high voice and upbeat personality often give way to a more nuanced and complex performance. Bell could lend a more powerful emotional edge to Amy Rose, possibly turning in one of the best performances in the role. Stunt casting is one of the biggest problems in Hollywood animated projects, but the Sonic film franchise has been stellar at picking big names who do incredible in their role. Kristen Bell is one of the most beloved comedic performers in the industry right now, and putting her in the role of Amy Rose would be big news and stellar casting.
