For many years, Sonic the Hedgehog fans have been calling for a return to the classic 2D platforming of old, and the upcoming Sonic Mania certainly seems to be aimed at meeting that demand. Delivering a classic Sonic vibe, the game has been gaining plaudits from fans ever since it was announced last year. Unfortunately, it turns out that PC gamers looking to play the game will have to wait a little while longer than console users.

Sonic Mania has been delayed on PC until August 29, 2017. This puts it a couple of weeks back on the console releases, with the game still due to launch on August 15, 2o17 for PS4, Switch, and Xbox One users. Although it's only a small delay, it's still bound to be a bit of a disappointment for those PC gamers hoping to play the game at the same time as everyone else.

The delay is happening for a reason, though. Apparently the development team wants to put the PC version of the game through a bit more optimization, with a little more time needed to bring the game up to the level that the team wants. At least in that respect PC users will be getting a better experience, albeit two weeks later than initially expected.

Those PC gamers are getting a little something to make up for the delay, though. Sega has confirmed that all PC preorder customers for Sonic Mania are getting given the original Sonic the Hedgehog for free. So at least gamers will be able to get back into the Sonic groove before they're able to check out the latest game.

It's not the only delay that Sonic Mania has seen over the course of its development. Previously this year, the game saw its release date bumped back to the summer, with Sega once again stating that the game's overall quality was the priority.

Although it's a shame to see the game pushed back on PC, it will hopefully lead to a better final product, and that's something that Sonic fans will no doubt appreciate after the very mixed results of games in the series over the last few years. For many, Sonic needs a successful 2017 to restore belief in the franchise, and making sure that Sonic Mania is in the best possible shape upon release will certainly help that.

Sonic Mania releases on August 15, 2017 for PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, and on August 29, 2017 for PC.
