Sega has been in a funk with regards to their blue mascot and have been putting in extra hours to bang out the dents that the Sonic series has accumulated since it’s popularity started to wane after the 90s. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is one of Sega's attempts to reinvent, or at the very least revitalize, the series.
They decided to make the games episodic, in what might possibly just be a strategy to give themselves time to improve after each installment. Evidence points to that being exactly what they are doing and Sega is already dishing on the many changes they’re making to Episode 2.
First off, Sega is including some familiar new characters, including Sonic’s twin tailed sidekick, Miles “Tails” Prower, and bringing back Sonic CD fan favorite villain Metal Sonic -- whose rivalry with Sonic was relived in Sonic Generations. In terms of gameplay, the team has been taking fan feedback very seriously and noted what players loved and absolutely despised about Episode 1. Sega started with an improved physics as well as graphics engine and are topping it all off with adjustments to make the game's control and feel more like the classic Genesis days - something fans have been pining for, according to the publisher.
One other interesting tidbit about Episode 2 is it will not be released for the Wii, making it the second Sega title within recent months to be skipped on the console. Brand Manager Ken Balough had this to say about Nintendo’s exclusion:
"The reason Episode I was on the Wii was because we wanted to bring the Sonic 4 saga to the widest possible audience. Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii -- for reasons most people have probably guessed, but that doesn’t mean the SEGA isn’t supporting Nintendo platforms, we have a very strong partnership and will continue to do so."
