Beyond being a video game icon with decades of history behind him, Sonic the Hedgehog was also one of the last properties to make a full debut in theaters before the pandemic really showed the industry who's boss. Due to being one of the final movies audiences were even allowed to see in theaters, it racked up a pretty nice box office revenue that guaranteed a sequel would be in cards as soon as filming became feasible.

So ever since there have been rumors, murmurs, and behind-the-scenes details about what might come in the Blue Blur's next silver screen rendezvous. Not much has been said officially, but the official Sonic Movie Twitter account has recently come out to announce a title for the film, and audiences may want to sit down for this one: the title of the sequel will be Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Ok, so it's not exactly the most original title in the world, but there's something to be said for straightforward numbering as well. Even the announcement itself poked fun at the name, opening the Tweet with "Groundbreaking. Thought-provoking. Extremely obvious." The announcement also came with a quick pick at the film's logo, which features very familiar Sonic the Hedgehog text with a bright yellow "2" slapped up on the side, followed by an April 2022 release date.

That's not everything though, the "2" in that logo also has 2 tails attached to it, which any fan of the games who is worth their salt will recognize as belonging to Miles "Tails" Prower. So, it would seem Tails will be in the sequel as well, which isn't surprising considering he was teased at the end of the last film, but it's nice to see some more confirmation that he'll be sticking around.

Not much else has been heard from the film, but Ben Schwartz, the voice actor for the film version of Sonic, did tell Comicbook.com that he had read the script for the sequel and that he was excited, calling it "awesome." Schwartz and James Marsden are expected to return for the sequel, as is Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, though the latter has not been officially confirmed yet.

It seems like the hype cycle for the Sonic sequel is starting to spin up its gears, so fans can expect more news in the future as the production starts making things publicly known. Hopefully, the film will live up to the quality of the first entry, and with any luck, theaters will be open in earnest when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 makes its debut.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will release April 8th, 2022.
