Sega has shared a brand-new trailer for Sonic Frontiers as part of Tokyo Game Show which revealed a lava-covered island, a new titan boss battle, and playable Super Sonic. While the ambitious title was never quiet about the role the Chaos Emeralds had to play, it was never truly confirmed if players would get to experience Super Sonic in the game's open-world environment. Now, it's one of many things they can look forward to when the game releases.

The Chaos Emeralds are a key part in Sonic Frontiers' story as Sonic and friends reach the mysterious Starfall Islands in search for them as they had vanished completely without a trace. After a wormhole sends them straight onto the surface, the blue blur wakes up and is told by a strange voice to gather the Chaos Emeralds from the vaults. Now with the inclusion of Super Sonic, at least players have a powerful reward for their efforts.

Alongside the small snippet of Super Sonic gameplay fans are treated to, players also get a glimpse of the Sonic Team logo the game starts out with, a look at some new enemies found in the desert Ares Island area, and a strange thin bird-like creature that may play an important part into how the game handles fast-travel.

However, the trailer also has the gameplay reveal of the Titan boss monster that has only appeared in cinematics so far, as well as the appearance of an enemy that aims to steal the Chaos Emeralds back from Sonic after players worked hard to collect them. It also gives players a look at some rather expressive and heart-pounding cutscenes that feature Sonic narrowly dodging being stepped on by the huge robotic boss.

This trailer implies a lot of interesting details that Sonic Frontiers has never gone into prior to Tokyo Game Show. It seems that keeping the Emeralds on Sonic's person may be a constant challenge, and judging by how the Super Sonic gameplay against the Titan boss is on the first of the five islands found in the game, this seems to say that players may have to visit certain islands more than once.

While the English trailer all but outright says Super Sonic is playable, as it says fans can "harness the power of the Emeralds" in the game, it's unclear just how far the all-powerful form will take players, especially if Super Sonic can be used in the middle of a playthrough like this trailer seemingly implies. Super Sonic may be reserved for boss battles, or may serve multiple purposes in the first ever open-zone Sonic game. Fans will just need to see what happens when the game launches.

Sonic Frontiers releases November 8 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
