Sega of Japan has announced that Sonic Frontiers has already sold 2.5 million units worldwide following the game's launch last month. Fans are celebrating with the company over this milestone for plenty of reasons, especially since the numbers back up just how much players are enjoying Sonic's latest adventure. These sales numbers for Sonic Frontiers matter in numerous ways. It shows Sega what happens if it allows Sonic Team to take its time developing a title after a fair number of the franchise's previous releases have been noticeably rushed to hit certain deadlines. The work has paid off, as Frontiers has broken series sales records in the span of a month due the game resonating with series loyalists.RELATED: Sonic Frontiers Free DLC Roadmap Reveals Tons of New Content Coming in 2023Two million, five hundred thousand copies being sold in the span of a month is huge for a 3D Sonic game in itself. Not even 25th anniversary title Sonic Generations reached that number, selling 1.85 million copies in its first year. This makes Sonic Frontiers the best-selling title for the series in over a decade, even outselling the fan-favorite Sonic Mania.

Part of these sales come from the fact that Sonic Frontiers is now the fastest-selling game in Japan, making up roughly fifty thousand units sold in the country alone if the old sales numbers from Famitsu are anything to go off of. However, Sonic Frontiers was also discounted for Black Friday as well as the general holiday season. Despite only being out for a month, the game is currently being sold for $20 dollars off its normal retail price to promote the game as a great Christmas gift. Due to this, Sonic Frontiers is most likely going to sell even more copies by the end of the year.

For Sega and Sonic Team, as well as fans, this only bodes well for the future of the franchise. From the beginning, the company and developers were transparent about how much they wanted Sonic Frontiers to perform well both with critics and fans. While the specific goals Sega set for Frontiers weren't made clear, there's a strong chance that the game could have performed better than the company expected.

Fans have agreed that Frontiers isn't a perfect game, but it serves as a sign of greater things to come. Not only is Frontiers' director accepting fan feedback, but he's already said that they're aiming to make the next game an even greater experience than Sonic Frontiers was. Until then, fans have plenty of DLC to look forward to in 2023.

Sonic Frontiers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
